I do think you are being a little self-critical. Even experts have lots of failures and work at their craft for a long time. Any more threats to jump ship and I will be convinced you are just blaming your tools, rather than yourself. Marac, never do I tire of looking at bird photos and definitely not Kingfisher captures so please keep them coming. With regard to the Sigma 100-400, I think we can all agree it was and is such a welcome addition to L mount, size, weight, cost all taken into account it is also an excellent performer. But, totally agree, over say 10 metres, details are lacking, especially where feathers, fur and anything that breathes is concerned. Many of us have found that, Rob @tritentrue who sadly isn't around here at the moment - tested at length, Ken, @Bags, to name just a couple, we all seem to have come to the same conclusion. Some can blame technique, (well if it's mine they can and I will accept their criticism), and maybe there could be some sample variation, but I really don't think so. I was a Canon shooter for years, and did take birding fairly seriously, I can look back at my results from 10-15 years ago and know I did a lot lot better with my Canon kit. I still have a do use the canon 100-400II and a recently added 1.4III extender adapted on the SL2 and while autofocus is fairly slow, and no AFC of course, I'm happier with the results when I can stand the weight😄! After all that, the Sigma remains in my bag for now. Edited March 24, 2021 by Boojay

After all that, the Sigma remains in my bag for now. Thank you for the kind words I still have the 100-400 on loan from Sigma (and the TC1411) that combination works well together but I'm not sure I can justify the cost of buying them. I will ALWAYS keep my CL I love it to bits, but I will use it as my main general photography camera, it is sitting in a bag alongside my M9M, M9, and M lenses. Crazy thing happened the other day, a friend of mine was after a windows laptop and I have one sitting in a box (long story), anyway, we came to a swap deal for his Fuji X-T3, grip & bag of batteries. There is an auto focus adapter called Fringer AF Nikon to Fuji adapter (nothing for L mount yet that works) So I am returning the 100-400 & trying out a 150-600 in Nikon mount on the X-T3 with this adapter. The research that I have done has convinced me that the AF is excellent and works similar to native with a slight drop in AF speed but still very impressive. I will also be investing in a pop up hide, I have been watching some very interesting videos on youtube about photographing wildlife and for now it has me hooked. I am very fortunate and always very grateful to SIGMA, if anyone can do it, they can. 600mm for under £1000, bravo. My thinking is that with this option I do not have to be at max focal length to get the shot I want thus keeping a certain level of image quality. This is all speculation for now but I love playing around with combinations and trying to find the best solution, hopefully this will help me & maybe others in the similar situation. Fringer also make other adapters and they seem to be doing a great job in producing Auto focus options. I am eagerly awaiting an option for the L mount. I'll let you know how it goes, fingers crossed. wda Posted March 24, 2021 Share #10955 Posted March 24, 2021 Jayne and Marac, long tele-zooms are beasts to tame and they are not my everyday lenses. However I have been inspired by photographers like Lawrence Lee who consistently produces stunning results with the contentious lens being discussed. It can be used successfully on the CL. It just comes down to what an individual photographer considers to be a successful hit-rate for the effort expended.. I also accept that some photographers like to rotate their photographic equipment more frequently than I do. Finally, I really like Marac's kingfisher shot and would be elated to emulate his success.

David, no doubt the Sigma can be used successfully on the CL, it's just some of us feel it has its limits. The three shots below for example (cropped a little) which were earmarked for the bin.. are just outside what I feel is good territory for the Sigma's retention of details. From settings could maybe have done with a little higher ss though 1/640 should have been enough, and last image there is movement from me not helping, but, zoomed in the feather details are not great.. something other gear/photographer's do better... Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! While I find the composition of the images pleasant enough, they just don't grab me, I'm really not blaming the gear just looking for more from both it and myself. I should add, I don't like swapping gear around either, one of my faults though is hanging on to stuff which should go, though with mirrorless there is always the chance of an adaptor coming along which make things work better😃. Jayne, it is difficult to judge an image's potential on a computer screen. At a glance, I would say they are slightly better than borderline for image quality. Regarding shutter speeds, I noticed that during my limited trials, choice of electronic shutter and using speeds rather faster than your choice, gave me a noticeably better success rate. Turning now to disposing of photographic kit no longer favoured for current work, I am deterred by the paltry trade-in prices for good, working, but redundant photo equipment. I realize that dealers need to make a profit. Take my X Vario as an example. My dealer advised me to keep it rather than trade it when buying my CL, and I have appreciated his advice. The CL effectively replaces the XV, yet I kept it because I simply love its ergonomics and its results. It is a stay-at-home camera and I use it extensively for table-top work and pictures of pets and people indoors (in normal times). That is mostly due to it retaining analogue controls and its excellent results. It is a very personal decision, as always.

I love switching gear around, most of the time my bigger lenses are only on loan anyway so they have to go back at some point. I really wanted to test out the Fringer adapter, and as they do not make one in L mount just yet, I was very interested to see if one could maybe be modified. I have some very clever, though totally bonkers friends who would love to jump in and try it. I found the adapter to work very well on the Fuji and the performance was satisfactory. As this is a Leica forum I wont post the results but you can believe me when I say 'Very good indeed', I hope they make one for L mount soon (I've already sent them an email about this) I really enjoy doing crazy stuff as it keeps my brain moist. The results Lawrence-lee gets from the 100-400 are stunning no doubt about that, we know the lens is very capable in the right hands I also think Jaynes shots are very good too but I also understand why they were headed for the bin. 1
