I share all your thoughts: great portrait (as are all rpoppes) with a bit too dramatic fall off to my taste. But I came to believe that it is his/her aesthetic style, and I appreciate the individuality. One of the problems with digital picture taking and post-processing developing is that it tends to create homogeneity. Even though I personally would try to create a more gradual fall-off--and I'd probably try to do that in curves or levels--I really like this as an individual aesthetic statement.

Thanks for all your comments and definitely something I'll take on board. Having said that this was a photo taken with a LED light panel that I wanted to show to a friend of mine who wants to get a bit more into portraits and lighting. This was to show her the quick fall off when the light source is close by. Agreed the dark side is very dark and could do with some nicer gradual fall off.

Again thanks for the comments. I do like the feedback when presented the way you both did!!

Rudi.

I've been pondering this shot since you posted it. Without doubt it's a very fine portrait. For what it's worth I think I would prefer it if the transition from light to dark was a bit more subtle and just a little more detail showing through the shadow without overdoing it and losing the mystery.  I hope you don't mind the feedback.

Absolutely no issue with the feedback. I actually appreciate it when someone ponders over an image I took. And the person is even unknown to me! The shadow is definitely too dark and I should have lifted it a bit. I was showing a friend of mine the quick fall off of light when light-source is close to the subject.

Thanks for pondering! 🙂

Not sure what I liked about this one other than it sums up the weather here, wet grey and pretty miserable... CL 50 Summicron collapsible.

I would say -- shape, balance (colours, weights), harmonisation (tones and textures), rich content and detail ...

Quite a few reasons to like it 😀

+1 . and loving the birds. Very crisp and modern aesthetic mixed with a Daphne du Maurier-like Gothic.
