That's a great lens, and I'm following one now on ebay. What adaptor are you using? I'm shooting a Vivitar Series 1 Nikon mount and estimating aperture with the Novoflex.

This is an AiS Nikon. I'm using the Fotasy, one of those cheap ones on E**y. I bought one for Canon FD and it was fine, then 2 for my Retina lenses, they were good too. So they had one for standard Nikon, not Nikon G, so you can use the lens diaphragm markings, which is nice. I have a Fotodiox that I have to estimate the F stops with my Nikon G Tokina 11-16, drives me crazy. I recommended this to someone else on the group and he didn't like it or the Fotasy, said the mounting on both was loose, I haven't had that problem with 4 $15 adaptors.

Thanks for this; I'm looking at the full manual one. I too am a disgruntled Fotasy alum, so went all the way to the Novoflex. And I also have the Tokina 11-16, which still works great on my film Nikon FE, but is somewhat disappointing on my CL, I find.

As I said I have had no problem with Fotasy adapters, tight, infinity is fine on the 4 I have. If you are looking for the AiS 105 really helps to have the standard Nikon adaptor.

The Tokina is disappointing on the Leica, on mny Nikon it is almost as good as my 55 micro, but it has had the Tokina infinity problem, that Tokina fixed free of charge for the under warranty, but I did find out in time, this is why I thinks it is disappointing on the Leica, while so good on auto focus with the my Nikon D300. Was going to get the 11-23 for my CL, but the last month or so has delayed my plans.

It seems we live in nearly parallel universes. 😀Good to know about the Tokina. After being disappointed with it, I managed to pick up a virtually new TL 11-23. It is, indeed, a very good lens, though when I look at photos taken with the L 16-35, I am quite envious.

Our son's young cockerel (Fred) forgot all about social distancing and made his way round to our garden today across the field, he's a fine young fellow though a little noisy in the mornings, no need for alarm clocks!  CL with Sigma 70 Macro.

Excellent series, Jayne. How do you find the weight and balance of the Sigma macro lens?

Thanks David, not sure if you have the 55-135 but they are very similar in size and weight, I don't have the steadiest hands and have to keep an eye on the shutter speed, certainly no problem in today's lovely sunshine. I have the Lims half case and grip fitted to the CL most of the time which helps with the slightly bigger lenses.

Another couple from today in the garden with the Sigma 70 Macro.... think I may need to break out the tripod to test the 1:1 Macro capability

Following in your footsteps.  I ordered the same lens.  They sent it to my office address, which is closed of course!  FedEx now says I will probably get it at home tomorrow.

Thank you Jayne. I have the 55-135 lens, so an apt comparison. If you have the time and inclination, it would be interesting to see how the two lenses compare on a shot at the distance of 'Fred', and another fairly close such as your picture of Japanese Quince. I rarely need macro (that is 1:1) capability. I am still trying to convince myself that I don't need a macro lens.

Lovely pictures @Boojay.

I too have been adopted by the local cockerel! Here he is posing proudly in front of his coop.

He's a handsome fella too!  Lovely.   Coincidentally our son has the same metal run for his cockerel and ladies!  They all roam freely during the day and scratch around the field, they seem to have just discovered that they can find their way to our garden which will not please my other half if they start attacking his various vegetable patches!  We had chickens for years and I loved them but the second time we lost them all to the foxes we gave up, we didn't ever keep a cockerel with them and the thought is he may alert us to a fox in the vicinity.

Not sure if these are any help David, certainly no shortage of time if you want me to try anything else but quickly took these.  Of course the "test" was lead by the MFD of the 55-135 and I shot it at 70mm and 135mm and kept the Sigma at f4 and f4.5 to match the widest aperture the 55-135 allows at those focal lengths.

Leica lens @ 70mm f/4

Bit closer in with the Leica at 135 f/4.5 - Sigma shot at f4.5 too... all shots had minimal adjustment of highlights and shadows in Lightroom, no sharpening or contrast adjustments other than those applied by default, from dng to jpeg and sized for here.

Leica @ 135

Sigma

As I said above, limited by the minimum focus distance of the 55-135, so above were shot as close as I could get... I did try manual focus with the lens but couldn't get any closer.  To my eye there is little or no difference in image quality, and considering how good the 55-135 is that's good news for the Sigma.  Now David, it's whether you want/need a Macro or just the ability for closer shooting that is the deciding factor.

Jayne, many thanks for your presentation. The jury is out. You have the benefit of being able to use the Sigma lens on your full-frame camera. I am trying very hard to maximize the use of my existing cameras and lenses. However, the Sigma 70 mm is tempting. Thank you again for your contribution. I love seeing your pictures of the animals.

CL and 55-135mm used to capture the moon this morning, April 16, along with Mars (just above the moon) and Saturn (very to right of the image). Planets easier seen when click on and viewed at the larger size.
