I concur. All it takes is one weird piece of wood, with an imperceptible crack or irregular grain, or a lapse in attention, and splinters fly.  We had fingers painted on the jointer like WW2 fighters had silhouettes of downed enemy fighters painted on the fuselage to remind one of the danger. Sh*t happens, and you want to reduce the probability of that as much as possible.

While using a table saw,  with zero safety equipment, I almost cut a flipper off of my Olive Ridley Sea Turtle. The board just exploded sending shards all over the place.
