The new lens lineup; Summarit prices?

Official price list for the Summarits has not yet been disclosed in the specific countries (my dealer told me so just today) , but it has been publicized, at the announcment, that they will be in the range of the Elmarit 28 asph, i.e. around 1100 to 1300 Euros, and a "quantity discount" shall be provided for single orders of > 2 items.

The 30% discount issue isn't related to this : it was a promo for early buyers of M8, who could buy one lens with this discount (a time-limited warrant was enclosed with M8) ; for what I know, officially it has expired.

Hi, Singapore is a good place to get new leica equipment at very good prices (Cathay Photo). If you're looking for used Leica equipment, I can recommend Bologna (Fotoprisma), Köln, Hamburg (there are a few places in each of these two cities) and Zürich (Foto Ganz). You can often get used equipment that is in almost new condition at Leica specialist shops there at reasonable prices. Happy hunting.

regardless of prices, i was severely underwhelmed by performance proofs for 75 and 90. fringing is pretty bad, and highlights are not as well-controlled as with, say, my old 2.8/90 fat tele-elmarit.

Did you test these lenses or a test has been published elsewhere?

performance proofs in jpeg and dng format are available on leica web site.

They were not that impressive. Leica has never been able to post decent sample files. We may have to wait until the lenses get into the hands of users to get a better idea.

I also noted they do not have the MTF curves for the lenses on the site. I wonder what that means? Are the lenses still in development and fine tuning or have they just not got the sales literature ready yet?

From looking at the pricing and the muliple lens buy discount, I think these lenses are aimed at the new Leica user who cannot afford the more expensive lenses and may otherwise just buy used lenses or third party lenses. I don't think Leica is trying to set new performance standards with these lenses, but just fill a niche for cheaper Leica lenses.

ah saw rthe things on leica site........ there are no proofs of 35mm but doesnt matter cause as robsteve says - the proofs are so none-informative to a user (ya even the dngg files)........

irakly...... not sure u can base opinion about the thing since the lighting condition (sparkles on light on metal etc) are problematic issue and without at least beeing there in real or even better having side by side shots u cannot say much about it man.......

otherwise...... i made a dng in silverfast hdr48studio processor (full raw support for m8)..... the thing looks ok but again - very difficult to say anything........ the pictures are simply non informative enough to get an idea of basic lens chractter (tech and aesthet)...... even proof print is not really helpful here.......

leica:

if u want to make proof fotos for your lenses (and almost any of leica lens can be proudly exhibited in action)..........

some fotos that u think are more or less natural area for it........ for example..... if 24mm elmarti asph... then a few architec shots, a few reportage-like shots , some in the sun, some in the not highly lit situations........ ya im serious..... it is pointless to show lenses (or camera proofs) ...... u need at least three well selected informative pictures (dng if for digi) to base some basic first impression.......

cause at the moment those proofs just show me that the lens has aperture and it can be opened to let the light enter :))

Victor,

I totally agree. Don't take shots that flatter the lens - we are not idiots. Take some shots showing how well it can perform in situations that will provoke flare and veiling glare. Take shots of the edge of leaves (like Sean Reid does) to show how well CA is controlled. Post corner crops taken wide open in difficult lighting. That is how to persuade Leica owners that this lens meets true Leica standards and that it really is worth my paying a lot more in comparison to the CV Heliar 75, which is the Summarit length that interests me.

US:

35mm Summarit-M f2,5 $1495

50mm Summarit-M f2,5 $1195

75mm Summarit-M f2,5 $1495

90mm Summarit-M f2,5 $1495

Only one I checked.

Taking tax into account, that is surprisingly equal pricing US/Europe. Good news for us Europeans.
