I think the last time I saw him was at the 1980 Chicago Jazz Festival with some of his original All Stars for the 60th birthday anniversary of Charlie Parker. Fabulous concert, it was recorded. The crowd went on and on for about fifteen minutes after everyone left the stage demanding an encore. When they wouldn't let up, Dizzy brought out James Moody and a couple others sans instruments and sang (poorly) happy birthday to "Yardbird". Still not satisfied the crowd got even louder. Dizzy got surly and told us to stop complaining, that it was a free concert and we should all go home and left the stage. This was taken at a club in Madison called Bunky's, which doesn't exist anymore! For several years they brought great jazz groups in, many of which I was able to see. I was there with a reporter and was able to be in a small room with Dizzy as he was being interviewed. I saw Dizzy in Dublin in the 1980s. He started by saying " Let me introduce the band" and then proceeded to introduce the drummer to the bass player and then to the pianist and so on. He was both a jazz musician and an entertainer, just like Louis Armstrong who came before him. It is a pity that a lot of jazz is so self serious these days. Imagine being a performer at that level, probably doing 300 shows a year, constantly traveling, then having to maintain an upbeat attitude for every audience. That's got to be really difficult. Miles Davis was extremely temperamental and had a reputation for doing just what Dizzy did in the situation you described.
