Vincent Douce Posted July 26, 2022 Author Share #21 Posted July 26, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) yes sorry sorry i had forgotten this main point yes… with only DNG the time becomes resonable, only ~3s, even with the 128Go sd card so the long long time came from the .jpg export everything is ok but if i can not export to jgp from the Leica, so : the question for me is, what is the right software to import my photos from my sd to my mac with ergonomic ability for exporting to black/white and color jpg format ? and also an other question : do i miss something if a dont use any longer the Leica native black/white jpg export ? There is a large choice of raw converters but if post processing is not your cup of tea, just double click on your DNG file and it should be converted automatically by Apple Preview ("Aperçu" in France). No. I used the jpeg from M8 sometimes, just to see in b&w ... but the long writing time was too long, so I didn't use the jpg again. Why don't you try to use your SD + adapter for transfering files to your Mac? Then use whatever you have on your Mac to learn easily.

I think this is a personal matter. Many people think that the M8's black and white 'out of camera' jpegs are particularly good and I happen to be one of them. You could probably produce comparable results in post-processing on your Mac but it tends to take quite some time and, to my eye, still not quite as good as the M8's b&w jpegs. I think of the M8's b&w jpegs as 'a poor man's Monochrom jpegs'. I've just done a sequence of informal shots with my M8 so that I'm not working from memory and the average for DNG + jpeg Fine timed with my iPhone's stopwatch comes out at between 7 or 8 seconds each between pressing the shutter release and when the red light stops flashing. For jpeg only it's around 2 seconds. Clearly the delay is caused by the M8 building the jpeg file (and the jpeg thumbnail file for displaying on the screen). Pete.

You will get mixed replies for this. Some people really like the BW jpeg out of the camera. I prefer converting to BW from DNG because I have a much longer tonal range and more control over the final output just like I did when I was printing film. I'm not finding the M8 jpeg BW to be anything special at all, but that's just my opinion. I've used every model from M8 to M10-R, except the monochrom models, and I prefer the BW images that I get from the DNG files of the M8. The M240 had the best jpeg BW out of the camera for me because there were contrast and filter options in the camera menu. But for me the M8 was what I preferred. This is all subjective from photographer to photographer. I like BW that looks similar to 35mm Tri-X. If you prefer a perfect BW that is similar to fine grain medium format film, then you may be disappointed with M8 BW. Using BW jpeg or converting to BW from DNG also depends on your comfort with post processing. Again, this is all subjective from person to person. I can output a toned BW image very quickly. I think this may have been mentioned by earlier replies, but if you are shooting DNG+JPEG it will indeed take much longer to render the image on the screen. If you shoot only jpeg or only DNG, then it should only take a second or two to bring up the image. About 95% of the image on my instagram feed are made with M8 with BW converted from DNG. I like the output, others may not. Everything is subjective and may not be to everyone's personal taste. https://www.instagram.com/photokesterson/ Just get out there and make photos!
