Good grief, that silly argument again.
Funny thing, apparently countless women all over the world have absolutely no problems whatsoever to carry their beloved Hermès Birkin (or Kelly) bags everywhere they go. And that on a daily basis. Without looking over their shoulder every minute in fear.
In case you didn’t know, prices for a Hermès Birkin start at about $15,000 and go way up quickly depending on the choice of leather.

All due respect, these bags get stolen on a frequent basis.

Apparently exercising good judgement about when and where to carry or enjoy your nice possessions is a thing nowadays.

That such thinking is necessary is a sad commentary on a decidedly small minority of people in our world, but ignoring the reality of the situation won't make it go away.

Sure, store robberies or home invasions. But that’s not what you were referring to with that bag screaming “Steal Me” comment.
I simply find the idea that somebody can’t use a nice and/or expensive camera bag to carry his/her Leica equipment around ludicrous.

@haribo it is ludicrous - and insane, and disgusting and one of the great failures of our modern culture/world.  It doesn't apply only to camera bags, but to Leica and other cameras as well.  In some places, just being in possession of a nice camera bag or a nice camera makes a person a target for criminal thugs.

This is one of the many tragedies of the modern world and I have no clue regarding how to rectify the situation.

Yes, but please, please  never let my wife know that when she's carrying the Birkin I finally managed to buy her for a significant birthday that the Leica M + lenses I've got on my shoulder and in my bag might have cost significantly more...😬

They even have a similar "insider" nomenclature - hers is a "35cm Togo leather Vermillion with Palladian hardware".

It similarly took 9 months of searching/multiple store visits to get it ie. not dissimilar to the trials of those trying to buy a 35 APO-M.

Unlike most Leica M body purchases it doubled in value once we took it out of the store.

PS - despite the oft-quoted and accepted rumours - and unlike the 35 APO maybe - there is no waiting list you can get on to buy one...

PPS - It remains an uncompromisingly totally handmade by a single artisan/best material available whatever the cost item - so ignoring the "fluff" around it, it remains a beautiful "thing" in the way that for me my M60s are.

Besides camera straps I design and make custom luxury bags. Handcrafted and hand stitched (no machine) to perfection. I only use the finest leathers and materials from Europe and employ the same techniques as Hermès’ craftsmen do.
Maybe that’s why I simply cannot understand the logic behind being too afraid to using a bag that echoes the quality of the equipment it contains.
How about nice watches? I doubt that kind of thinking will stop a guy from wearing his Rolex, Patek Philippe or whatever else they fancy.

I wear my Rolex Submariner date on a daily basis with no fear.  As with my M cameras, I don't go where an attempted robbery would be a likely occurrence.

If trouble comes looking for me - well, that is another matter entirely.  At 65, I have survived death more times than I can count.  I will not be fucked with by any petty thug that is fool enough to come-a-calling.

This may not be a politically correct attitude - but I apologize for nothing.  May God bless one and all.  🙂

Good for you! And your wife, of course.
35cm, Togo leather and Palladium hardware … that’s easily in the $25,000 range.
(It might be cheaper to show her my Instagram page next time. LOL)

Correct, there’s no such thing as a waiting list for a Birkin bag. One has to own several other Hermès bags already to even qualify for placing an order for a Birkin.

I know all this sounds crazy. But Hermès is truly an exception. It’s the only luxury brand where the word ‘luxury’ still holds its original meaning. Exceptional quality and true craftsmanship.
Which is in complete opposite to other brands like Louis Vuitton, Prada, Fendi and such. Their mass-produced in China crap reduced the meaning of luxury to bling and fancy logos. Sad.

Without treading on Harry's toes re Oberwerth I bought a leather wrist strap from Leica Miami for only $49 so the pricing of this set seems a little "off"

I will check out Harry's bags later...

I am not familiar with Oberwerth and their products. I don’t mean to sound arrogant but simply looking closely at the picture of that bag tells me all I need to know.
Frankly, even with a quick glance I noticed several tell-tales already that make me question the level of luxury the bag claims to be.

Well it cost a lot less than that in the end but yes - it is an "exquisite" item - totally handmade from the finest materials by only the best and most experienced craftsmen/ladies of the atelier.

A throwback to the cost-be-damned it-must-be-the-best era.  It's a shame in a way that it has become a kind of "trophy" item for people who don't appreciate the hours that go into its hand production.

I hear you. It takes a lot of time and skills to handcraft a quality bag.
It always blows my mind when people think that ‘handstitching’ means pushing a piece of leather by hand through a stitching machine.
D’uh.
But it’s not just the hours that go into hand production. It takes years of training and dedication to attain the skills necessary!
