Thanks to EVERYONE for your advice.  Y'all rock.

Based on what I've read from you, I'll probably take the 50mm and the 28mm --or perhaps just the 50mm and the phone (if I can satisfy myself with my as-yet-untried skills stitching 50mm shots together).

Peace,

Brent

Sounds like Denmark is a 28mm country.

Anyone got recommendations for other national focal lengths?

FWIW the UK is a 2 inch focal length country (near as dammit the same as everyone else, but we want to be different).

I don't see the point of taking only one lens when you have at least one other lens unused at home.  Personally I 'd find that restrictive.

As you have a 50mm summicron, I'd take a 28mm .

My own preference when taking two lenses is 28mm & 75mm summicrons.  I prefer the extra reach of the 75mm as a second lens and this pair served me well with an M10-R during the whole of last February cycle touring and backpacking in Sri Lanka.

In Sri Lanka I used the 28mm for  around 75% of the images I made, the 75mm for the rest.  I'm cycle touring in Namibia in a couple of weeks time and I'll take the 90mm apo-summicron safari and 28mm summicron asph safari this time

M10-R, two lenses, two spare batteries and four 128gb SD cards in a Hadley digital makes a versatile and compact outfit that doesn't distract with too many options.

Hey , did you read my post about 35mm?  Just kidding.

Good choice. Two lenses (28+50) to cover all situations, it totally makes sense. But not phone, just for emergency.

Can we compile a list of countries and ideal lenses to use?

I've posted many times that a 35/90 combination is a great travel kit - in my opinion.

Maybe a bit late with my suggestion.  However, here is my choice(s) as I just returned from Croatia and Greece.

M10R + 21mm SEM + 90mm Macro Elmar + extra battery + polarizing filter.

I find lenses with focal lengths at the extreme ends of Leica's offerings are a challenge and a little more fun.

I did think: Just take the 50 and use the phone for everything else. That might be a solution.

That was the idea, for forum banter. But it’s not an approach that I would choose for my own photography.  My dedicated camera is for photos, which when worthy, end up as prints. My phone is for other needs, including only occasional simple documentation purposes. I own very few lenses, each of which suit my photographic style, and none of which depend on country visited.  Every country in the world has subjects to suit most any style.  Besides, I’d be bored silly if my pics mimicked everyone else’s. I can buy postcards of typical tourist destination views.

Late to the party but I'm yet another who, for 'Minimum Kit', would say 35 if one lens is carried and 28 / 50 if two will make the trip.

Have a great time!

Philip.

I've just returned from a week in Copenhagen. I took an SL2-S w/50 Lux R E60 and my Leica QP. I hang one camera on each shoulder and wear a very light jacket - my straps are long so a camera can just swing out to my hand to take a photo. With the jacket on its impossible for the cameras to fall (or be taken) off my shoulder. I've worn cameras like this for years. No bags - just a couple of batteries and cards. My hands are free when not shooting. Stop into the new Leica shop and say hello to Peter. It's his store. Beautiful city - this was my first time back in over 30 years. No matter what gear you take - Have Fun and Travel Safe!

I did, Dennis. 'Twas a fine post, indeed. And believe me, I've thought about that option too. I just know I'll want closer in Italy at least.

Well, now that you say it like that . . . .  I think it's a fun idea and could become a very humorous thread if people got creative with their reasons.  Of course it points out the absurdity lurking behind my original question 🙂.  I wasn't meaning,  of course, that each country had a proper focal length assigned -- although, as I say, I would love the idea of such thread.  I was only trying to get a sense of scale.  You know, how far can I back up before I fall in the drink.  That kind of thing.

'Made my day, James.

For a while I was shooting with a 50mm on my M and then kept a FujiFilm XF10 in my pocket. It was 28mm equiv, much faster than changing lenses and also easier to pocket than my 28mm Elmarit v4. The output was really nice too. A part of me regrets getting rid of it.

In honor of yourself and Mr. Early, I've launched just such a thread.

And yet, something else I hadn't thought of.  I'm really glad I asked. I'd better try this out before I decide.  Never tried stitching a pano before. Thanks.

Shouldn’t be too difficult to achieve, most modern post processing software can do it.

Yeah, I gave it a whirl last night. It was amazingly easy. Don’t know why I’d never tried it before. Thanks for the suggestion.

No problem glad to help.  Have a good night out with the savings from the 28mm 😂😂

I couldn’t possibly spend that much on a night out. A month out, maybe. 🥳

I'm just glad I bought the v1 years ago—back in my old film days.
