Hi,

Last Friday I got my Q2 and after charging the battery, installing firmware 4.0 and loading a SDHC card I have been reading the manual meticulously and testing out the camera. I have to admit I love the Q2.

Since the camera is quite expensive I bought the LEICA Premium Hybrid Glass Size 2 protector. That's a first for me. Never before have I bought or applied a screen protector, not for any camera I own, not for any smartphone or tablet I own.

And as you may have guessed all ready, I failed miserably in applying the protector. It only took me seconds to leave a clearly visible fingerprint and several dust spots on the adhesive side of the protector. When I then put it on the LCD it looked ridiculous. So I removed it again.

I have two questions. Do you Q2 owners think a screen protector is recommended (how many of you do actually have a protector on their Q2)? And is there a way to salvage my stained LEICA Premium Hybrid Glass protector.

Cheers.

I don’t put screen protectors on any of my cameras and definitely not the Q2 and Q2M.  I couldn’t care less if they scratch or scuff and if I drop one, I’ve probably got bigger issues than a scratched screen.

I put “Expert Shield” glass protectors on all my cameras. It’s a cheap solution that fits the rear screen really easily (unlike the Leica solution) and should save you from chips and irritating scratches you can get. Worth it. And while you’re at it tape over the microphone and speaker holes with duct tape!

100 percent, not so fast. I have one on my Q and my Q2 (Leica brand). In my opinion they have offered excellent protection from scratches and finger prints. Have other cameras with scratches from zippers on camera bags! The protectors do not interfere with the quality of the review images or touch screen operations.

Photo tape over the mic and speaker holes per Le Chef isn't a bad idea either.

If the fingerprints and dust are on the adhesive side, it's a lost cause.  I turn off fans. AC, close windows etc.. when applying screen protectors. Try and make a "clean room" environment for the 30 seconds it takes to apply the glass/film.

I also put the Expert Shield screen protector from BH over my Q2M because I'm sort of clumsy and trying to preserve resale value ("No scratches on screen!" etc...). I found it a little thicker than I'm used to (I used a Japanese-brand Hakuba for my Canon R5) but the coverage is 100% and it doesn't intefere with the touch screen. However, I'm not finding i use the touch screen that much on the Leica. The Expert Shield is also pretty cheap, I think it is regulary $20 and seems to go on sale about 2-3x a year for $15 or something.

I agree, I've used Expert Shield glass protectors on all my cameras for years, now including my Q2.  A bit of a trick:  before removing the protective film on the protector I fit it on the LCD with blue painters tape (removeable) on the bottom edge of the protector.  It acts as a hinge so that I can lift the protector up or untape it until the fit is right.  Then I lift it up with the tape hinge in tact, make sure the screen is clean, peel the protector inside film off and "drop" the hinged protector closed...  Once I am sure it's just right I put light finger pressure on the protector and peel the blue tape off.  It works every time.

Good lord, do not put duct tape on your camera, lol. Even the proper gaffer tape isn’t needed. Q2 is weather resistant as-is. All the hybrid screen protectors are nearly impossible to apply, and the glass one from Expert Shield looks ridiculous being so thick. Just use it and don’t worry about scratches.

I use one also and recommend it expecially for a valuable camera.  I have used them on my cameras for years and the screens look like new when I decided to sell.  It is thin hardened glass and not very noticable IMO.  I wear my camera on a strap when traveling or out shooting and the shield shows wear over time but not the LCD screen.  I tested one recently on another camera (a Ricoh IIIx) when accidentally hit the iron frame on a chair when sitting down.  A corner of the glass screen protector shattered but the LCD screen was unharmed.

@canticleer I have the Expert Shield screen protector on my Q2 https://www.amazon.com/GLASS-Expert-Shield-ultra-durable-protector/dp/B07Q31PBTV/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1SKQ0P1ZDT4SV&keywords=expert+shield+for+leica+q2&qid=1656906274&sprefix=expert+shield+for+leica+q2%2Caps%2C86&sr=8-2

It is easy to apply as long as you follow the directions to the letter.  It provides excellent screen protection with no decrease in touch screen usability.

Thank you all for your replies.

By now the yes sayers are winning 6 to 4, with a majority using an Expert Shield Glass protector. It seems like Expert Shield protectors are readily available in the US and the UK. Sadly not so much in the EU.

Buying from in the US or UK adds import taxes and custom fees. Which make it very expensive. Amazon charges €32,33 + (additional) VAT and shipping costs.

In a EU webshop I do find JJC GSP-Q2 Glass Protector for Leica Q2, costing €19,95 + €3,95 shipping costs. Anyone who has experience with the JJC glass protectors?

Thanks

I put glass screen protectors on all my cameras. Doesn’t affect touch function or usage. I buy mine on Amazon for less than $15 which usually includes two protectors. I’ve had the camera-brand protectors before and the ones I’ve purchased on Amazon are identical in quality, appearance and ease of use. For the price I pay, it’s inexpensive protection. For those that sell or trade their cameras, a scratch-free LCD is a plus to a buyer and can make a big difference in the price they’re willing to pay. For those who don’t sell or trade their cameras and/or don’t care about scratches, feel free to disregard my $.02.

Thanks for the reply William. Do you have a link to the protectors you buy?

Cheers.

Another vote for the expert shield screen protector,  I put one on my Q a few years ago.  Still looks and works as it should.  Need to order another for m10r but undecided if I want the crystal clear or try the anti-glare this time.  Either way, at $15-20, its cheap protection.

I'm very tempted to buy one too but here in Europe Expert Shield isn't that cheap. They only have webshops in the US and the UK. Thus, EU sales will be subject to VAT, import duties... when shipped from outside the EU. Since Brexit shipments from the UK are from outside the EU too.

My estimation is that total cost will be somewhere between €40 - €45.
