My Q2 used to take the most fantastic images but after the 4.0 firmware I have been having so many issues with the images coming out, they are grainy, even at ISO 800 you can see the grain like if I were shooting at 25,000. The exposure is horrible, the focusing is slow, this white balance is off... I am using the camera the same way as I did under the 3.1 Firmware but the results are terrible. I have to spend a ton of time in post trying to correct the exposure, the white balance and reducing the grain. Has anyone else experienced similar issues? Can I reinstall Firmware 3.0 in my Q2? Any suggestions would be very appreciated as this is driving me crazy. I shoot DNG so it's not a JPEG effect.

  • rrincon changed the title to Horrible pictures after Firmware update 4.0. Am I the only one?

Rrincon,

Hopefully you followed the instructions for Q2 firmware update.  Try:  https://www.reddotforum.com/content/2022/05/firmware-updates-for-leica-q2-and-q2-monochrom/

I suggest you call Josh Lehrer at Leica Store Miami, FL and tell him what your Q2 is doing with the update.  He is probably the best person to ask via phone and most helpful.  It is worth your time to make the call and speak with him directly.  The store opens at 10 AM on Monday.  Hope this helps.

Thank you for this. I followed these same instructions and the installation was successful. Never the less something is wrong with the camera... I never had these problems before under the 3.1 firmware and I've been using the Q2 for more than a year with spectacular results in the past. I really appreciate you suggestion and I will give them a call. Thanks again.

What post program(s) are you using? Have there been any changes to them just before you installed 4.0?

I'm using Lightroom Classic. I have not changed my workflow in the last couple of years, so I don't believe it has to do with the editing software. Also there was one job I shot with the Q2 (after the upgrade to 4.0) and with a 5D and the images from the 5D had no issues... the images from the Q2 are really bad.

perhaps if you post a few pics, and list some exif data, people might be able to make some suggestions

I am a professional photographer freelancig for over 20 years, unfortunately the bad images I have are from jobs I have shot during the last couple of weeks, so I can't show them due privacy issues. I used the Q2 with the 3.1 firmware for over a year with excellent results in the past... perfect exposure, perfect skin tones but now after the update all is wrong. If I use Auto ISO it takes me by default to the max I have set... so it is taking pictures under bright sun at 6,400 ISO! If I set it to 800, you can see the grain in the photos. It's crazy how wrong things are going. Also the results that I see in the viewfinder as I'm taking the photos are completely different than what is coming out of the camera. Fortunately the images are still usable but require a lot of post to make them half decent... a problem never had before in the previous year shooting with the Q2 when I was getting incredibly beautiful raw images and needed almost no post work.

I've only owned a Q2 for s couple of weeks (loaded 4.0 before using it for the first time) so I don't have any previous version experience to compare BUT I have run into similar issues with other devices.  Couldn't you reload the previous version into the camera the same way you loaded the most current version, that is, load the previous version onto the SD card and then do an "update?"

But surely you could manage to take a couple of shots with the issue that you can show here?

Hi everyone,

I've been shooting with my Q2 for over 2 years and also have been experiencing issues, although different, since my update to firmware 4.0.  What I am experiencing is that whenever I have Auto ISO selected, I always get ISO 100 irrespective of the lighting conditions.  I also am now getting EXTREMELY slow writing speeds to my SD card (SanDisk Extreme Pro 300MB/s) which I also never had issues with before.

I have reformatted my card multiple times using SD Card Formatter (full format, not quick) and then formatted in camera with no performance improvements.

I also have reset my camera to factory default and reapplied my settings manually but still have the ISO issue and slow SD card write speeds.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That is strange behavior. I would contact your Leica dealer, or if that is not possible, Leica directly.

Normally updates only go forward not backwards.

Could someone verify a similar behavior regarding SD card write speed?  I have have fully reformatted 2 different SD cards (both Sandisk Exteme Pro 300MB).  From the time I take a picture (DNG only) to the time I regain control of the camera to be able to take another picture is one one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand.  I feel that this is longer than it was prior to the 4.0 upgrade.  Has it always been this way and I am just suffering from a senior moment?  😀
