Thing is, with this  sort of thing, you can buy it, stick it in a drawer for a few years, then sell it for several times what you paid.

These limited editions are a bit like tapping your shareholders for a bit of cash. In this case, it's Leica's hardcore customer base – fanboys and collectors rather than shareholders – who are providing the cash. It's largely a win-win for both company and customers. Leica quickly sells 250 x £18,000 sets (£3.75m net of tax). Stripping out dealer margin and cost of production, it is still a nice little earner for a smallish company like Leica.

Maybe ...

I have assumption that most of these titanium M-A would never see a film inside them,

apart the TriX roll in the box ( only 250 rolls produce for them here, not a lot ).

 

I hope that film not dead though 😉.

If I were lucky enough to get one of these I would definately use it! Even if I planned on flipping it later, the temptation would be to great lol.

How does it sell out in minutes?  Are Leica shops informing elite customers of the edition on the sly and selling them or taking deposits before the official announcement is made? 

If so, is that really ethical?  Does that not violate Leica's vaunted nondisclosure agreement?

I don't know where these "it's sold out" statements come from.  Because it says so on the Leica Store Miami web site?  I'm pretty sure that only reflects their allocation of the camera (which might amount to a very small number of the 250 units made).  I very much doubt they have insight into the worldwide state of availability.

Reminds me of the all steel Rolex Submariners that list at $9000 with greedy retailers pricing them at $20,000. 

It seems not very smart to volunteer to be robbed in such a manner manner, even if you are endowed with money to burn.

I am on Leica Miami's mailing list  - and all I did previously with them was buy a hot shoe cover!

That is how I found out about this M-A - I received a mass email from them when it was announced.

But even if one is on the wait list, it does not mean that they will get it.

I remember being over the moon, back in 2015, to have secured one of the "limited to 500 pieces" 50mm Summilux ASPH retro black chrome lenses. You can still buy them new now. They must have made thousands of them so far!
