I tape my Leica M camera, lenses, and Nikon digital bodies.

It's about avoiding distractions for me and the viewers. It's about anonymity and discretion. I like better when everything is black. And I started in 2013ish (maybe), years before I got my first Leica.

.

The white word Nikon on the black body is so distracting; I never liked it. The same happens to the red dot. It's saying look at me. Usually, in PP, I crop distractions 😆 The same happens with my gear. I can't explain it correctly, but it works like a charm. I would love all my M cameras with a black dot like the M11M. Meanwhile, a top matte no-sticky tape works perfectly.

I get hiding the logo for aesthetic purposes but don't fool yourselves into thinking it will help against thieves. These days almost anyone with a dedicated camera is an excellent target unless you're shooting one of those Instax toys. :)  They don't care if they nab a $3,000 or $9.000 camera; it's all better than a wallet with some pocket change.

I am the opposite. I have a spare original logo when I bought Q2 (the one I bought didn't come with red-dot, I complained to Leica NJ and they mailed me a new one, when the store agreed to exchange the camera). I sticked that red-dot to my M10-R front screw :D

And I am thinking to get another one for the M-A

This is the perfect tape to stick over the red dot!! It can be ordered directly from Leica CS.

I taped up my first camera, a Canon AE1 Program, back in the mid 80’s.

I did so because I was doing a lot of mountaineering in those days and the exposed metal in very cold temperatures was a hazard.

I recall peeling off the tape when I sold the camera many years later. It was perfect beneath. Like new.

I’ve got a roll of proper gaffers tape (which isn’t the same as duct tape) and was going to tape the Leica, but I’m a bit wary of the effect of adhesive on the M11 paint finish.

+1. Agree laughable if true anyone would think covering the red dot deters theft (haven't read back through this whole thread), but I also but wouldn't presume this to generally be the case. Some people debadge their cars. Leica builds blacked out variants of their cameras. It's not uncommon for people to debadge, because some people like subtle, esp. with, imo, the Leica red dot which, to many, is synonymous with luxury and excess. I think ppl who take issue w/ others debadging their cameras just need to get over it and go take some photos -- don't even know why such persons would be on this thread in the first place.

BTW, the MAIN reason I bought the SL2S Reporter was because there is no red dot and more importantly, no large lettering staying LEICA up top. Frankly the Leica lettering is very obnoxious to me after having what 30 M's  and still holding on to 7 right now.

The regular SL2S at least has the large LEICA lettering blacked out.

Agreed 100%. I laugh at some of the users who think with the red dot covered they are safe. Like I said before, a real thief knows what to look for.

Im just not keen on the bright, glaring, laser like red dot on mine.

I got an aftermarket black logo for my black M6 shortly  after got it (nearly a decade ago).

But just tape over my black M11.

I dont kid myself it less stealable than any other slightly fancy looking electronic equipment, just its less of a glaring lighthouse-esque lantern!

when is Leica selling black Dot again, I have seen the M11 with it, so they do have them.

They never sold them a a part. They were on some M8.2 cameras. DAG used to sell them.

Nope.  Only the black M8.2 had them on production models; the silver M8.2 had a red logo. These were quickly abandoned thereafter, however, as Leica Microsystems, the owner of the logo, did not authorize. Any subsequent black Leica logos you might have seen were DIY (DAG used to hand paint them, but he stopped long ago).
