In the world of software, there will always be bugs. It’s only a matter of how severe and the breadth of impact to the users. It’s pretty standard that companies will not openly disclose every known bug and draw customer attention to it because:

  1. It’s a great way to scare potential buyers away that would otherwise not even notice or be impacted by such a bug
  2. It’s a great way to damage the company reputation
  3. It is not a safety issue that may endanger someone or put them at risk of imminent danger

If (3) is a concern, that’s why there are recalls.

The problem we have is not going to kill or endanger anyone and only APO Summicron SL users are impacted. Only Leica knows how many APO Summicron SL lenses are in the wild but how many users need to shoot in low/medium speed continuous burst and have the aperture stopped down below f/5.6 where the shutter lag is more noticeable.

In single shot mode with the aperture stopped down, the lag is noticeable but only really if you’re directly comparing against the SL zoom lenses or are very frequent summicron SL user where you notice the difference right away.

For me, if I didn’t see the issues posted here, I wouldn’t have noticed the issue because I primarily shoot with the 16-35 SL. It may be different if I had the 24 APO SL as I would likely use that lens more regularly than the 28 APO SL but as it stands right now, since the 24 APO SL doesn’t exist, if Leica patched this bug in 4 weeks and if I didn’t go on this forum, I would be none the wiser and it would have not caused my any harm whatsoever to be oblivious to this issue.

This whole thing just makes me wonder who their beta testers are. Can’t imagine Jono would miss something like this, I noticed it within two minutes of updating the firmware and starting to use my Summicrons. Really across all of their cameras the firmware is often pretty glitchy, although it gets better with time. Maybe they should let people who actually use the cameras under working conditions beta these firmware upgrades and save us all a lot of aggravation.

Having being beta-tester for earlier fw-updates (but not this one); one explanation can be that beta testers may test intermediate versions of the fw, but not necessarily the final/released update. So it is possible that the 'latency' issue was not part of the beta-tested fw. Clearly, Leica runs their own tests (and have their own testers, I assume) - and someone should have picked up the issue. But not necessarily the (forum) beta-testers.

yesterday I want to reproduce this bug: SL2, FW 4.0; Summicron-SL 35mm, 90mm, Summilux-SL 50mm, some Leica SL Varios, some other lenses;
setting: M 1/750s, AFs, manual shutter.

While all Varios, Pana/Sigma lenses and the Summilux-SL are showing no differnces when stopping down my two Summicron-SL-lenses maybe are getting a little bit slower; I would not recognize this without the discussion here, it's less 1/4 sec.

Maybe I used "wrong" settings???

Bug is only for apo lenses.

WE ARE!

Most of the beta testers are hobbiests, the users of this forum.

Doctors, engineers,  retired professionals,  all with one thing in common. We have  photography as a hobby and treat the equipment much different to someone who uses it on a daily basis as a tool, not to take picts of our vacations or kids.

This is the main reason such bugs pass unadverted. Different to other brands in which they use professionals to test the systems in the field.

By the way,  Leica replied to an email o sent them about the eta to deliver the fix and taking the firmware down = that it will be released on a timely manner... that's it :(

That clarifies a lot of course.

Hey,

I was part of the beta testing team of Avid Media Composer for years.

And we had the "golden candidate" this was the last version before it was published.

And this was the version that was most tested.

Is there anyone in this forum that did the beta testing? If it's only done by Leica internally, then it´s not a beta test.

This is alpha.

And if they publish alpha version then a lot of errors are published.

I can’t speak to this latest release but last time I did beta testing, it was only for the camera firmware and not lens firmware. When the official release came out, there was lens firmware that came with the release version of the camera firmware. But during the beta testing period, no lens firmware were given.

I expect the issue we see is specific to the APO summicron lens firmware and not camera firmware, even though the lens firmware gets delivered with the camera firmware. I have no idea what Leica’s testing process is for lens firmware.

Regarding the latest camera firmware release, I wasn’t involved with it either. It’s entirely possible that for FW 2.0 (SL2-S) and FW 3.0 (SL2), because it was a fairly major release, Leica had a bigger pool of beta testers so more people here were involved. Whereas with FW 3.0 (SL2-S) and FW 4.0 (SL2), there were not as many features so Leica did not feel the need to have a large pool of beta testers. Perhaps they stuck with a smaller group with the likes of Jono and others like him.

I was also informed this morning first thing that this is a known issue with the latest firmware update and they are working on a fix.

Also this appears to be a lens firmware bug, the same behavior occurs on the Panasonic S1R.

leica just released the fix, its firmware 3.1, not sure how they will distribute it, but i was notified via email and sent a link to download it.

I can confirm the aperture issue is fixed. i haven't done any other testing, just verified that the aperture issue was no longer present.

Happy to be able to use again my 35mm as intended :)

It hasn't shown up on Fotos yet.

Now the update to 3.1 shows up in FOTOS (at least in my case). Update via App worked fine and issue seems to be fixed (initial testing).
