Lovely cameras... and now off topic: Can somebody please enlighten me as to why there is a line adjacent to the 60 and 125 shutter speeds and the flash sync has it's own detent?

Hello Everybody,

Welcome to the Forum.

The reason for the detent at the "lightening bolt" is that it is the fastest speed that the camera was synchronized for electronic flash at when the first "M" camera, the M3, was released. Electronic flash would expose a film correctly at that & at lower speeds.

It is a measured 1/50 of a second.

Best Regards,

Michael

Thanks Michael - it’s just unusual compared to practically all the old M shutter speed dials where the x-sync is simply squeezed in between the 1/30th and 1/60th. I’d not seen/noticed this particular layout before.

But all this is due for a change. My M7 is currently with Leica at the moment 'cos since 2015, my mum has passed and I'm having a new top plate made to include both hers and my dad's signature on it. I'm not certain how they'll squeeze in both signatures yet (in an elegant way without looking messy, but I have faith that they'l be able to do it nicely).

I'm also looking at changing the shutter dial & the on/off switch to the Hermes version.

You may complain that this is not an "A La Carte" M7, and that's right: that offering ended before I bought an M7. But if I had ordered just as I wanted it, it would still be the same. I've used M2 through M6 for decades, and M9 and M10 since they came out, and in my old age came to appreciate the auto exposure (with exposure hold) features of the digital Ms. So when I found this pristine M7 I got it as a perfect film companion to my M10.

The Nokton lens with it's unusual focus grip may seem like an odd choice, but on the M7 it feels great to me, as the feel of the focus and aperture controls works well. Also the fit, finish and performance of the chrome lens is excellent, and I think it looks at home on the M7.

Some old pictures from when I got it. I chose blue leather at the time because I was young. It is going in for service soon and I think I will get a different color...probably black, to be honest. It is a .85 viewfinder, which works great for me as I tend to use 35mm and longer, or wider than 24mm.

I recognize this one 😄 especially the rewind knob

What's the story behind this pls? Is this a genuine M7 with MP rewind, or some other model with just an M7 shutter dial put on it? A decade back when I was having a custom à la carte top plate put on my M7, I enquired about an MP-styled rewind and Leica said it wasn't possible.

Hi,

it is a genuine M7 modified by a third party (DAG) to receive a MP rewind button mechanism and fitted with a M6 Millenium top cover  .
