The new firmware 1.3.0.0 for Leica M11 is available at the Leica website now:

https://leica-camera.com/en-US/downloads?download_area_category=1161&field_media_document_topic=1074&field_media_document_language=984

The firmware as well as a detailed PDF of how to update and what it does is there.

Specifications what it does:

_NEW: Perspective control (in-camera straightening of lines)
_EXTENDED: Additional exposure metering method (highlight weighted)ht-weighted
_EXTENDED: Additional storage options (DNG on Sd card and JPG on internal memory)NG on SD /JPG on IN
_IMPROVED: Bugfixes in the firmware (The bug fixes are not further specified but could be shutter delay, CA, etc)

The Fotos App 3.1.0 for smartphone and iPad was updated yesterday:
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/leica-fotos/id1356061526

As far as I can tell, updating camera firmware from the FOTOS App is still a planned feature. I don't see it in there when I connect the Leica M11 with the phone via cable.

Curious to see what you experience that the firmware does for your camera?

  • Overgaard changed the title to New Firmware 1.3.0 for Leica M11 (and Fotos app updated to 3.1.0)

I'm a little bit disappointed. I wish that was not the case... I'm always going to favour bug fixes versus new features.

My main issue prior to the update was in single drive mode. You had to have auto review set to "shutter press" so that the camera takes a picture when you double tap/press the shutter button. I can't believe I just typed that. I don't like having auto review set to "shutter press" because occasionally the image flashes up on screen, which is very distracting when you're using the RF. With auto review set to off the camera just feels too "laggy" on v1.3.0, unless you have a slow and measured shooting style.

@Overgaard Are your issues with shutter lag fixed :) ?

Well the problem is still there after updating...

What bug fixes are actually fixed ? another Leica mystery..... I hope it does not take 2 years to get the bug fixes we need.

The updates of camera and FOTOS app have Brocken the picture review functionality.

When you are connected and viewing the last image full screen and take another photo the image on the screen does not refresh anymore.
You need to go back and into the browser and the thumbnails refresh.

Another fail is the Prospective display function is visible on the screen and not on the Fotos app when remote shooting.

Good thing this is out of the way, now they can focus on the M10 FW update to accommodate the new Visoflex, 3 more days to release it on schedule...let's see if the M10 team beats the M11 team in making customers happy

Low continuous speed on RF and LV is now both the same (so that is fixed).

Single shot is a little tricky. I guess the shutter curtain movement is a physical thing; preventing fast shooting one after the other in Single mode.
Solution: is to set it to Low continuous and do single in that (quickly press and release shutter for single shots, keep it down for Low continuous).

The new Highlight weighted light metering is an odd one: Help you ensure that highlights are not over-exposed; but on expense of the rest of the photo. This is a specialized feature, maybe for snow landscapes and when wanting to do HDR photos.

The Center-weighted light metering seem to have been adjusted to be the actual center (seemed ineffective in previous version where it seemed to measure the full frame). So that is good.

I suspect the M10 firmware is written but the same intern as the M11's, working in some basement/dungeon below the Leica Wetzlar campus ...

Thorsten, have you tested the highlight-weighted metering on M11? Every manufacturer implements it differently.
I compared two indoor shots and found the results of highlight-weighted metering better (more exposure) than with multi-field metering. Typically, I would expect less or equal exposure.

Can someone point me to the steps that work for doing a firmware upgrade without losing the count of photos being reset?  I have seen different posts and I am not sure which steps actually work.  Thanks for you help.

Excuse me, what exactly is the problem with the shutter?
I can shoot with or without the LV without much lag.
On 1.2.1 the camera froze spontaneously, now it works fine.
Under what conditions are there problems?

The problem can be reproduced as follows:

- turn LV off

- mechanical or hybrid shutter

- turn Auto review off

- single-shot mode

Check how many shots you can take per second by repeatedly pressing the shutter: not many. The camera does not feel responsive.

Now set Auto Review to something else, e.g., Shutter Button Pressed. The number of shots per second increases to the expected value.

@JimKnopf No problem - just inconsistent behaviour between settings...

Test Case 1:

  1. Use mechanical or hybrid shutter
  2. Set to single drive mode
  3. Set Auto Review to "Off"
  4. Switch off LV

Consistently press the shutter button twice every second (appreciate this is extreme - but mimics situations where you need to double tap the shutter button to get 2 shots quickly)

Result: The camera misses a shot every other shutter button press

Test Case 2:

  1. Use mechanical or hybrid shutter
  2. Set to single drive mode
  3. Set Auto Review to "Shutter Press"
  4. Switch off LV

Consistently press the shutter button twice every second.

Result: The camera takes a shot on each shutter button press.

I'm asking why we need to have Auto Review set to "Shutter Press" for the camera to work this way.

@Overgaard It is odd but you have to be on WIFI and then you get the option to update the firmware via the app. I was connecting the cable as well and only got the camera roll. When I unplugged the cord the option to update was there on the wireless connection. Very Odd, however, the transfer of the firmware wirelessly was quite fast.

The new highlight weighted metering, to me, is counter intuitive in execution and I'm not sure it's working properly.

I've just returned from a walk in the dunes, and the highlight weighted metering completely overexposed some shots that had shadow detail in them. The image is so over exposed that I'm pretty sure the red channel must be clipped a bit but LR doesn't return any clipping warning... however pulling down the exposure doesn't result in the highlights retaining the same colour. First attached image (8237) is with highlight weighted metering. Second, (8237-2) is with -2.15 Exposure in LR. Third, (8238) is Multi segment metering with -1.7 stops dialled in on the camera.

The multi-segmented metering gets fooled extremely easily and I find the M10 had better (read more predictable) metering.

Thanks.  I understand how to do a firmware update.  What I am looking for is the correct instructions to prevent shutter count from being reset.
