That's why I wrote "announced," which occurred in March 2009.

I know - I was there.

Just spent a day in London looking at cameras and working out next steps.  I came away very impressed with what Sony are doing.  Apologies to the better informed members of the forum for what I am about to share.  It was new to me.

Having used Leica for 40 years the only affair I had during that time was with a Canon DSLR back when it looked as if Leica had no digital future.  Then the M8 came along and I resumed the journey with Leica products: M8, M9, M240 and when manual focus became impractical, I switched to the CL system.  Sony I always dismissed, based largely on the mediocre legacy they acquired from Minolta.

It seems that in recent years Sony have expanded and improved their system massively, so it is now considered the top choice by pro photographers I know.  Their camera bodies are compact, lighter than all the opposition (the SL2 is 50% heavier, BTW) and perform very well.  The lens system is greatly expanded and includes high end lenses that are universally praised, as well as compact lenses that are practical and light.  The E lens mount is available to the likes of Sigma, Zeiss and Tamron so they can provide full-function equivalents, just as in the L mount alliance.

Researching before the trip I was thinking of, say, an SL2 with a set of compact Sigma lenses to keep the weight and size manageable, with perhaps one of the SL primes for the most demanding requirements.   Afterwards it seemed to me that I could do the same with, say, the Sony A7R4, using the same Sigma lenses and a Sony G Master prime.

For that I get a compact body with class leading autofocus (the performance is amazing), IBIS, high end viewfinder, 60 Mpx croppable in camera, class leading high ISO performance, ... etc. Everyting I would ever have wanted in the CL2, available today (available two years ago in fact) at an affordable price.

I can still trade-in my CL system for half its new value, to contribute more than half the cost of changing to the Sony equivalent.  Has the time come for a divorce?

Sony is a really nice system today.  They make small practical cameras.  It will be an excellent choice.  I have leica AND Canon today.  If you can replace the CL with Sony / nikon or canon then you are in a safer environment.  You could consider buying an electric “small” leica to keep in touch with the leica forum 😉

I bought the CL because it was the perfect combination of form and function. It had a dedicated line of lenses and other suppliers who were stepping in. In addition with an adaptor I could have added M lenses but didn’t. The issue a number of us now face is that we invested in TL lenses so we’re in a cul de sac with nowhere we can go but to either use them up or sell and start over.

Not as long as things keep happening.

Now Leica Singapore appears to be dumping their remaining CL kits/lenses at a 20% discount.  Unusual for these parts, but at least it's one upside to the whole saga . . .

After deciding not to buy a small Fujifilm X-E4 in January, I came across a “newish” used special edition CL with an included 18mm. It was a good price and I purchased it. Then I found all the posts here about the coming end to the CL line. I have decided, though, that my decision to buy the CL was a good one and I will keep it, in spite of facing the CL apocalypse. For me, I now can have a lightweight small camera with the capacity to use my M lenses in a way I find pleasant to use. I find the resulting photos wonderful and I now have a small camera to accompany me when I’m out with my Q2M and find a photo that really needs to be shot in color.

I now read, with special interest, about all the old hands from this forum talking about moving on to Sony, Ricoh and other camera makes. Others encourage this migration to new systems. Now that the CL is discontinued, it will soon be undesirable and barely tolerable to use. I want to add my voice and encourage you all to quickly sell all your Leica CL gear. Sell it quickly and sell it cheap. That way you know you can be rid of all that unwanted, discontinued glass and can find happiness in your new systems all the sooner.

In the meantime, I will be shooting my newly acquired CL. I will also be on the look out for the best of the many discontinued, useless TL lenses soon to glut the used market. Thank you all

Greg

PS perhaps my one regret would be leaving this community of Leica photographers after 20 years of membership.

Others here must be having similar thoughts.  The facts are compelling.  Would appreciate your views.

I still keep and use my film Leica cameras. Not sure if you dabble in the old art yourself but a film Leica keeps me connected to this forum despite that Leica has no roadmap that they’ve revealed which contains a digital camera I want to buy (whereas their competitors do). Keep using your old Leica cameras for fun.

And you can still, with an adapter, use many Leica lenses on non Leica camera bodies which gives you another reason to stay connected to this community.

I did sell it. But at high price. CL is actually very sought after. I sell it in less than 5 hours. Four potential buyers fought for it.
It won’t be a bargain, because people know that it is an excellent camera. And especially that it is the last APS-C !! No fear for a newer CL2 = acceptance of its fair price.
without CL2, CL will keep its price forever.

Just use them—-it’s a no-brainer.  🙂

For people thinking that stopping a system is no big deal. Look at what happened to Nikon 1, Pentax Q or Ricoh GXR.
Obviously you can still use them. However they are stuck in the past forever. Making them undesirable to be used today. Except for nostalgic/fun purpose.
A range of lenses are only as good as its latest available and suitable bodies. No ersatz please.

NB: Such AF lenses won’t be compatible with anything else than their proper bodies.
So it is way worst than R lenses story, which can still be used on almost every DSLR and mirrorless.

The sad ending of CL is not only a huge loss for TL lenses owners (which is a very small demographic) . It is also a big one for M lenses (which is a way bigger group)

CL will be the last tiny competent camera with EVF made for M lenses. It is a 1.5x M lenses teleconverter hidden in a small camera.
No other Leica mirrorless will be more suitable for M lenses (despite the 1.5 crop factor)

It is quite ridiculous to use tiny M optics on huge SL bodies.
Noctilux of course.
Otherwise why on earth would I use a way bigger than M body for such diminutive glass ?

Woawww it seems you are the only clever man in this group, I mean the cleaverest¡.

Look, nobody here is happy selling CL and lenses. First because we liked and second because we have invested a lot of money in this system. I own 3 TL lenses the 11-22, the 18mm and 35mm , say about 5.000€ -6.000€, the problem is that at this moment WE CAN'T USE THIS LENSES in other body and no, SL Or pana S's are no options. When you invest in lens, you invest in a sytem, now all we the same issue, we will be able to use our lens untill our CL die.

I'm glad that you feel happy with your new CL. Think of it like an historic underrated camera thain going to increase in value over the years, yes it's a jewell, like you😅

So please take a look at this offer: you can now have my CL and lenses, for only € 9.000 € , a bargain , considering it's future value. Please Check it out¡.

I was asking you because i have only one TL lens (Sigma 18-50/2.8) and i use it only on the CL but it has an L mount so i thought i could use it on any other camera with the same mount. Am i missing something?

Does anybody know something about this adapter?. I have asked several times at the seller and he have asked also to the manufacturer, it seems that is for L mount to Fuji XF mount. At the moment I don't own a Fuji body, but I'll buy it if it can be used  in a second  since I owned a Fuji E X 2S and it was a nice cam, it seems to wide.... Here is the link

Sorry Enrique but i don't understand what you mean. Could i use my Sigma 18-50/2.8 L lens on another L-mount camera? Simple question i believe...

It doesn't look like it's for L-mount, maybe M?  The difference in flange focal distance between Leica L and Fuji X is only 2.3mm, so not likely that there will be any such adapter.  Even if the L-mount could be changed to X, you'd have no autofocus or aperture control.  And since the TL lenses are focus-by-wire, manual focus would not be doable, either.

I think you are the one missing something. I have used TL lenses on my Sigma fp and my SL2-S. They work fine.
