Survey: Would you buy an EVF only camera with an M mount?

  1. 1. Should Leica make a manual focus EVF camera?

    • Absolutely. I'm second in line after Flash.
    • Never! It's the work of the Devil.
    • Hmmm? Not sure. I'd want to see it first.
    • I want one of each. M11 and this new wonder camera!
    • Not for me but I'd be happy if it exists.
    • Does it come in Monochrom?

I wouldn’t buy an EVF M. I think Leica needs the equivalent of a small SL with a rangefinder style body. Effectively what Sony did with the A7C. My guess is people would then care a lot less about an EVF only M since they could use both L and M lenses easily… along with have auto focus when they need it.

I use the Sony A7C a lot with both E mount and M mount (via adapter) lenses. The EVF is awful compared to a Leica SL, but the overall seize and weight is roughly what I expect a EVF only M to be. An added plus is the Voigtlander M adapter has a built in close focus helicoid which is something I don’t have on my M.

I might have accepted such a solution if the adapter didn't protrude from the camera (but that's pretty much impossible I guess).

The difference in flange focal distance is 7.8mm (L is 20mm, M is 27.8mm) and an ingenious engineering soultion is quite possible IMO. I see no reason why a front plate (~7.8mm thick with an M bayoet) which mates perfectly with a thinner camera body could not be well enough designed so that the whole becomes M sized and shaped with it fitted. There are many ways in which this could be achieved although it might take some careful designing to look the part. The real question for Leica is about the profitability of such a camera however it is designed (native M or L/M) and whether the compromises involved are acceptable.

Just make a fake M front complete with frameline selector and and windows. It can easily be printed and attached with Velcro. That should satisfy any HCB pretender. A pair of rimless glasses to go with it should be simple enough to buy.

BUT, all users must be nimble and at least 6ft tall.

I don’t really see the point in an L mount.  We already have the SL, SL2 & SL2S.  The SL3 will be smaller, better faster etc etc  This isn’t about L mount, and for those wanting such a solution, just buy the SL3 and use the existing very good adapter with your M lenses

Have you tried the Sony A7C? It’s M sized with a EVF rangefinder style design. I am guessing there is no way the SL3 will even be close to this size and weight. With M lenses it’s extremely compact and quite a different experience from an SL. The benefit is you can use auto focus lenses in addition to manual focus lenses… seems like it would be useful to a lot more customers than a true EVF M.

No, and I have no intention of trying it.

So, many of us have been outlining the benefits of an MEVF; I have been suggesting it for over 10 years, which may confirm it will never happen!

So, what would I dislike about such a camera?

(1) without a serious battery and processor upgrade, it would chew through batteries

(2) the M11 shutter sound, and lack of a shutter altogether?

(3) more critically, the lack of an OVF

Now, I know the last one seems ironic, but stick with me.  With a properly adjusted rangefinder, the OVF offers supremely fast and accurate focussing, if indifferent framing.  For everything from 50mm wider, the OVF coupled rangefinde is superb and accurate; not so much for longer than 50mm.

Everything is a compromise …

If you want to turn the M into a dead bog standard mirrorless -which an EVF M would be albeit with manual lenses to start with, the M mount is obsolete and not usable. A new mount will be needed, why not use an existing one?

Yep, use the M mount - perfect.  The L mount is best suited to L mount lenses on an L mount camera …

No but i have some experience with Sony cameras. Very good cameras with a common point: they are not made for M lenses. Reason why my A7s and A7r2 have been modded by Kolari Vision. The result is fine, especially on the A7r2, but it cannot compete with my M11 as far as M lenses are concerned. It is the key point here. I don't need a mirrorless camera for Sony lenses nor for Leica L or TL lenses, let alone for whatever AF lenses but for M lenses exclusively. This thread tells me that is i am not alone but i don't know if we are several enough for Leica.

You did not understand my post.  Using the M mount on a full mirrorless camera is a technical absurdity. Either create a completely new  retro-compatible one for the existing M system or keep things nice and simple and use the existing L mount. What you are saying is like wanting acetylene  headlights on a Tesla. The M mount is obsolete.

Technically -yes.

Then one can ask the maker of a technically inferior camera to make another technically inferior camera if they like technically inferior lenses don't you think so? I don't know for you but i have never chosen a Leica product for its technical superiority so far. There are nikanosonyfuji cameras and perhaps SL cameras for that.

Obsolete is not inferior so I do not understand your question.

I have never seen a technically obsolete thing to be technically superior in anything so far but i will gladly learn from your explanations.
