Any recommendations for a small crossbody bag that lies flat for packing to fit an M11 with a lens attached? While a large bag or backpack is nice for transporting a lot of gear, when I’m at the destination I often want to take my camera in a minimal fashion (to say dinner) and don’t want a big bag with me.

In this case just carry the camera alone. If you look for camera bags, they are usually not packable because of the padding. There are plenty of packable slings, they just don't provide any protection.

Lens pouch has very good protection. More flexible and fits better. Protect insert is another option.

I use two types of camera bag, one for transportation, another for easy access. Transportation bag is backpack, has very good protection, easy access bag is light and convenient. Both must fit my body very well and comfortable to carry. Dedicated camera bag is hard to find with good fitting.

I have bought many many camera bag, Finally I realized limiting to dedicated camera bag is hard to find perfect fit.

I’ve found one design flaw in my Fogg Lyre.

The clogball used to close the main flap is brass and screw mounted. No problem with that.

The problem is that when closed, the back side where the brass screw head is rests on the leather strip that forms the front of the magnetically closed front pocket beneath the closed main flap.

It’s marking the leather and over time would scratch it. I’ve put gaffer tape over the screw, which solves the problem, but I’m surprised the problem exists at all given the level of thought and attention to detail found in these bags.

Think that would be rather big and not particularly packable into another bag. I would take a PD sling or Hadley pro small in that case.

I’ve ordered the Hex Ranger cross body sling to see how it works. It’s made to be a camera pouch. Seems pretty small and will fold down flat.

Buying camera bag to fit is more difficult than buying shoes. Only you can know how it fits.

I dithered between the Hadley Pro 2020 and the Hadley Small Pro. In the end I went for the larger bag, which I’m happy with as it also allows me to carry a rain jacket (which you’ll need in the. Cotswolds!) and a bottle of water, or my Q2 and M11, which I never do. It is unnecessary large for a one camera one lens set up though, for which I’m using a Peak Design 3L sling. Of course, I’ll end up buying the Hadley Small as well but I’m trying to restrain myself for a few more months.

As expected, I gave in yesterday and bought a Hadley Pro Small (sage with chocolate leather).

My 20+ year old Lyre has a different design, without this concern.  Instead, the closure is Velcro rather than magnetic, and has a piece of Velcro ‘silencer, which I use, on the opposite side, so the front pocket remains accessible. Nothing has ever fallen out of the front pocket once the outer flap is closed tightly.

I’m sure that Nigel will respond to any concern you might have.

Billingham Hadley digital will be after that.

And finally the Billingham 72, which is actually all you need for one camera and one lens …. ;)

I actually bought two so I can carry two cameras, one lens each, and spread the load. Very effective.

I use a Chrome Industries Kovac in black
https://www.westernbikeworks.com/product/chrome-kovac-sling-bag

I think it's discontinued, but it's a perfect bag to hold a body with lens + at least one more lens. The straps on the bottom for a "jacket" works great to pack a smaller travel tripod as well.

I usually put the camera in a neoprene sleeve, and the lenses in their own pouches. Sometimes if I just bring the camera with lens, I'll just put it straight in the bag as long as nothing else is in there.

IF it's empty, you can squish it pretty flat to pack.

I must admit I’m a little bit of a bag junkie too and can share my experience with various bags I use.

My primary style of photography is travel/street. My primary objective is carrying a kit for the day with the least weight.

I also like being stealthy so all my bags, cameras, lenses, jackets are black.

3 kits I use for the Leica M system starting with the smallest/lightest:

  1. Wotancraft Pilot bag

Volume: 2L

Weight  Bag: 300g

Fits -Leica M 10-P with 35mm Summilux FLE without hood

       -Ricoh GR III

       -extra batteries

  1. Peak Design Sling Bag

Volume: 3L

Weight Bag: 550g

Fits -Leica m10–P with 35mm Summilux FLE with hood

-Leica M6 with 35mm Summarit 2.4 with hood

       -extra batteries

  1. Ona Bowery Bag in black nylon

Volume: 4L

Weight Bag: 662g

Fits -Leica m10–P with 35mm Summilux FLE with hood

-Leica M6 with 35mm Summarit 2.4 with hood

       -28mm Elmarit 2.8 with hood

       -50mm Summarit 2.4 with hood

-Optech back to back lens holder

       -extra batteries

Regarding half case, I’ve got experience with Arte Di Mano (M10M) and Oberwerth (M11). Arte Di Mano is significantly better in terms of used material, cut precision, durability, feel. However, it is fair to mention that Arte Di Mano is almost twice more expensive and it has long delivery times. So my opinion: if the price and time is not an issue for you, Arte Di Mano. Otherwise Oberwerth is ok.
