... and how might you feel about it if it did?

We know a firmware update is coming to support the new EVF, but that got me wondering around the possibility of the new menu system making its way on the to 10, or at least the R.  In my view, as I intend to carry both often, I'd love to see a unified interface across the two, but of course, it the Maestro may neither have the power nor the memory to pul this off. And the button layout is overall the same, but labeled differently which might be a little problematic.

Thoughts?

I think this would provoke howls of protest, and IMHO they would be at least partly justified.

When we use a camera for a while, we get used to its quirks and they make their way into "muscle memory" to the extent that we can find the buttons and do whatever we want in the dark without looking or thinking. While the M11 user interface may well be better, to retrofit it to an existing body would cause all sorts of trouble.

Isn't Leica's usual practice to implement the latest features into all subsequent new releases?  Have they ever introduced retrograde updates that make an older camera perform like its newest sibling?

Aside from the technological limitations of updating older cameras with newer firmwares, WHY would they do this?  They are in the business to sell new cameras, not make older cameras perform like the newest ones.

Yes.  A firmware update to the M8 was used to provide delayed shutter re-cock (to subdue its noise when shooting in quiet environments) that had come as standard in the M8.2.

But that was an update within the same generation.  Has there ever been an inter-generational firmware update - notwithstanding the upcoming update to allow the M10 to use the newer Visoflex - that made an older generation perform equivalent to a newer model?

Well yes but considering that the M8 was the first generation of digital M it kinda had to be since the M8.2 was the newest sibling at the time.

I remember when I bought my M8 in 2006 Leica made bold statements about the M8 being your permanent camera because Leica would continue to provide firmware updates that would add new functionality over its lifetime.  That was quietly dropped when the marketing department worked out that it would hinder sales of new models.

Yes, that delayed recock was entirely silly.  Shoot, hold finger on shutter release, cough loudly as releasing shutter to disquise recocking sound, look at person next to you, and realise you've just missed a prize winning picture due to faffing around.

But someone must have liked it.  I just learned to love all aspects of the M8 including the recocking clatter and particularly luuurved the filters. :P

All best..

PS I still have two beaut M8's which i use a "very lot"...i like their crop on full size lenses...usually not available to APS size cameras.
