KFo Posted January 12, 2022 Share #1 Posted January 12, 2022 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I've been enjoying my 35 pre-ASPH Summilux quite a bit. I like the cine look that my copy has been yielding, and I'm getting a handle on what it does in various conditions. This said, I've always enjoyed working with the 28mm prospective. I've got a "whole grip of 28s" (2-crons, an elmarit, and a new version summaron). All lovely lenses and each fills a niche in my work. But none render anything like the 35 P-A! Is there a 28 that yields that glow? I'm not a snob, so I'd buy any lens that draws in a similar way. Edited January 12, 2022 by KFo
Advertisement Posted January 12, 2022 Posted January 12, 2022 Hi KFo, Take a look here 28 that renders in fashion similar to 35 pre-ASPH Summilux?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
adli Posted January 12, 2022 Share #2 Posted January 12, 2022 Are you asking about the cron or the lux?

I'm asking about the Lux pre-A. Edited the question to be more clear.... Thanks!
Tp2000 Posted January 12, 2022 Share #4 Posted January 12, 2022 Love the 28mm focal length too….have had cron previously and have the lux and summaron now. Neither give you what you’re after - however the lux wide open is an absolutely stunning lens. There was a post just before Christmas on this. Worth a quick search and there are a few example pictures in there. The only other lens I can think of that gets you a little nearer the rendering of a 35mm PA might be the v1 voigtlander 28mm ultron. Still a modern lens, but less contrasty than a cron and little more (only just) “glowy”. But that’s entirely subjective….but I do keep coming back to that lens as it renders differently to others and I just like it. However you’d have to prise the 28mm ‘lux out of my cold dead hands - that’s my overall favourite 28mm which has the most beautiful rendering.
Capuccino-Muffin Posted January 12, 2022 Share #5 Posted January 12, 2022 28mm elmarit V1, 9-element. Highly collectible.
rtai Posted January 12, 2022 Share #6 Posted January 12, 2022 The 35mm Summilux Pre-A is a special lens, absolutely incomparable at F1.4 and F2.0. You can get a similar DOF with the 28mm Summilux but still it is a technically perfect lens at f1.4 akin to the 35mm Summilux Asph Pre-FLE. I think if you introduce some defect into the 28mm Summilux ala Sally Mann it can replicate the look.
caloosajo Posted January 12, 2022 Share #7 Posted January 12, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) MS Optics 28 f2 pancake seems pretty glowy. There are some examples on Japan Camera Hunter’s site. “But is it Leica glow…”
Guest Posted January 12, 2022 Share #8 Posted January 12, 2022 The elmarit f2.8 version 2 [1972-1979] is about as close as you will get with a leica lens . I own one and like using it for people pics especially as it has that slightly old fashioned rendering near maximum aperture ,it also flares in a nice controlled way shooting into the light. I would imagine its sharper wide open than the old summilux which was a more ambitious design.

Cosina/Voigtlander Ultron f/1.9 has glow and low contrast at f/1.9-2.0 similar to the 35 pre-lux at f/1.4. And then cleans up at smaller apertures, just like the 35 pre-lux. It's a year-2000 lens in Leica screw-mount, easily adaptable to M with a simple ring. Do not confuse with the later M-mount f/2.0 C/V 28mm lenses. Not the same at all. Some more info here - although I think Rockwell is overcritical of the handling, which I found to be perfectly fine for the size (which goes with the fast, glowy f/1.9 aperture - physics and all that). https://kenrockwell.com/voigtlander/28mm-f19.htm Edited January 13, 2022 by adan 2
shirubadanieru Posted January 13, 2022 Share #10 Posted January 13, 2022 Easy answer: no Lens renders like the 35 lux pre-asph, period I’ve tried all LTM Leica 28mm, even their first, the Hektor 28mm has no glow. Still has a lovely, classical rendering that might be worth checking out. Similarly, the Summaron 28mm is a contender, but again no glow to be seen here.

That 28mm Ultron at max aperture I agree is most similar to the Pre-A.
KFo Posted January 16, 2022 Author Share #12 Posted January 16, 2022 I'm having a look at the Ultron V1. Reid reviews has a review that includes that lens. I'm not certain that it is exactly what I'm imagining but the cost of entry is low enough that I will find one and give it a go. Thanks for the tips!
