In the Basel agglomeration, where I live, the conditions for Milky Way photography are extremely poor: there is simply too much light pollution. Nevertheless, it is possible to produce a DNG with the M11 and the Summicron 28mm (latest version), from which the Milky Way can then be made visible in Lightroom. Normally, I use the Z9 and the Nikkor Z20/1.8 for situations like this. That setup clearly produces less coma in the corners. But I was curious to try out the M11 as well. Now, I would need a lens that is more suitable for this purpose: wider angle, less coma, and as fast as possible. I don’t think I’ll find anything like that from Leica.

Leica has a nice 21mm f/1.4 that I use on my M11 it is only 1 mm. shorter in focal length than what you use with your Z9 and a little bit faster.

Do you use this lens for astrophotography, too? In my experience nearly all Summilux-M-lenses suffer from vignetting and coma when used wide open. M lenses are far from ideal for Milky Way photography. In this field, the M system simply can’t compete with the capabilities of the big camera brands — or even Leica’s own SL line.

Do you have an idea why this is? Has that to do with the flange distance?

I assume so, yes. If you build a system according to today’s demands for image quality, you naturally choose a flange distance that allows optical designs to be less critical when illuminating the edges and corners of the image. Even the Leica M Apo lenses show noticeable vignetting at wide open aperture, including the superb Apo-Summicron 35mm. You can never achieve perfectly illuminated corners at this flange distance when shooting wide open, especially not with ultra wide-angle lenses. If you simply look at the bayonet diameter of the Nikon Z or Leica SL, you see that completely different possibilities exist for illuminating the same-sized sensor.
