How to upload images:

Prepare the image as follows:
1.   The image should be sRGB and 8-bits
2.   Reduce the size to 2048 pixels on the longest side. (smaller sizes can be set, but are not recommended)
3.   Sharpen properly for screen.
4.   Save as JPG to your desktop, reducing JPG quality to produce 2000 kB (5000 kB for sponsoring members).
5.   In Lightroom these parameters should be set in the Export dialog.
6.   In the Forum posting or editing box, click “choose Files” and select the image.

It is also possible to embed an image through linking, but the  embedded image must still fall within the forum size rules above. There is also the risk of a broken link when the image is moved or deleted on the other site. Not recommended.

When you find an image on the forum you see a preview. Click on it for good quality. When the plus symbol appears click on it for full size.

I respect this forum's rules, so I'll probably not be posting images going forward - the above just involve too many steps. I used to simply copy and paste a link to photos on my Smugmug account, very easy, not at all fussy. Question: is all the above an actual rule which prevents me simply linking photos from my website, or just a suggestion? I had been simply linking photos until recently you told me about size limitations (which I still don't understand since linking an image doesn't upload an actual image to the forum). Much easier to post to other forums including Fred Miranda where these rules don't exist.

Perhaps things have changed, but the only real "rule" was about image size.   Don't upload or link to anything larger than 2048 pixels or 2 megabytes (and I think those numbers have grown slightly over the years).  Hopefully someone who knows will chime in if I am incorrect.

I'm still confused by this rule. If you link an image from another website, I thought nothing physically is being uploaded to this forum's servers. And if that's true, then what's the rule on pixel long side? How is a bigger image creating a problem? The only way you'd know if an image was larger would be if you downloaded from my linked website and then checked its actual size.

But, those are the rules regardless of their purpose and whether it makes sense, so of course I'll abide - simply by not posting any more pics because I don't want to take the time to make sure they comply and then get in hot water if I post and they don't comply.

When you link from another website, I think you can pretty much ignore points 1-6, as they are made for those who export from their computer. And I see them only as guidelines, not as rules. Just copy and paste the link as you already do. If the linked image is made to be displayed on a website, it will automatically have the requested qualities.

I think the main reason they're not too happy about linking to images from other websites is that such links are often broken, leaving blank spaces in the forum threads. Apart from that, I can't see anything but advantages with that.

I've actually considered starting to link from Flickr, because those images display at the right size in portrait format. That's something this forum can't handle, because they're displayed the full width of the browser, and unless you're using a mobile screen, that's way too big.

thanks.

Jaapv one of the mods told me that I need to observe forum rules on size limitations even when linking an image - something I don't understand for the same reasons you expressed, and something I've never had to do before when posting images on this or any other Leica forum sub-forum. I think he only discovered that the linked image was bigger than what he says is a forum rule because he downloaded one of my linked images to do some work on it (which by the way I was just fine with). Had he not done that, then he wouldn't have known that the linked image was larger than the requirement.

Oh, and there's never been a broken link coming from my Smugmug page. And also in terms of just viewing one of my linked images on this forum, it looks exactly the same as it would compared to an image that was a smaller size. Very simply I don't see any logic or reason to a requirement that my linked (as opposed to uploaded) images must meet this arbitrary size limitation, and so far jaapv hasn't offered any explanation. Again, however he's the mod so I'm not going to violate what he says are forum rules.

In the past it was easy-peezy to simply link an image from my Smugmug account. But to go through all the machinations this rule (assuming it really is one that applies to linked images) would involve, no thanks, I'm done posting on this forum. Instead I'll just limit my posting of images to Fred Miranda or DPR which is so much easier and not fussy.

I have 2 ways to link from Smugmug. First is if I click on the image on Smugmug to blow it up to its full size and then copy to link. Second is to right click the image before I've blown it up, and copy the link. The second way produces an images that's smaller in size (and therefore appearance when linked here) than the first way. Perhaps the same applies to Flickr?

I haven't been on Flickr for a while, so I don't really remember, but I'm considering joining again, much because of this. I see others here on the forum linking from Flickr, and their photos appear sharp and perfectly sized, whether landscape or portrait.
