I've long been involved in an annual conference on machine learning (with a strong connectionist or "neural" emphasis).  It started, years ago, with 100 people in attendance, has grown to over 10,000, but went completely virtual during the pandemic.

Well, we're back, in a bunch of new hybrid forms, but with at least half of the meeting face to face.  The facilities didn't go away:

and we can fill them:

But the heart of meetings like this are face to face interactions where students and others defend their ideas and results:

Of course, there is also a trade show

with merch (mostly for free, in return for your contact info)

But the most important objective, besides science, is JOBS

You can just feel the millenniums pass. Do they shoot sci fi movies there? That has to be one of the best locations I've seen.

Flight of the Phoenix (2004) was shot at this mountain.( I was shooting mostly west with the mountain to east.) They also most of their scenes in the dunes not far away from where I walk with my dog and take the dune pics.

Mad Max Fury Road was also filmed here and also in some old dry river canyons not far from here.

I'm sure there are many other films, but I just don't remember as I'm not bothered remembering.

Ah. Nice! Are you staying in Walvis Bay? Weird place and not exactly pretty 😂 But access to the desert and coastal sights is also quick.

Truly epic! That should be awesome, what role do you perform in the production? I hope you can bring your camera.

Thanks,

Tim
