The rewind knob is just a knob on a shaft that turns, no gears to mesh, no cams, no specific direction of travel (unless rewinding a film), it has nothing other than newness.

True, but when loaded with film, it also has the entire mechanism on the other end of the camera to deal with as well. I mentioned earlier that it rotates just fine with no film loaded. I assume they think it's _something_ worth looking into. Hope so. We'll see!

If the mechanism is simply suffering from 'newness', maybe you could sacrifice a roll of film and load/shoot through/rewind it a handful of times and see if things loosen up.  Might be worth trying before sending the camera off to NJ for who-knows-how long.  That should also give you an opportunity to break in the shutter and frame advance mechanism ;)

That could be true, and if I thought it was simply a matter of "breaking in" then I would happily continue to use the camera as-is. However, the rewind mechanism, based on my admittedly limited experience, feels wrong somehow, so I'm happy to have Leica look at it and tell me it's either a problem they can fix or that it's just something that will take care of itself eventually.

I see your point but you have a warranty and that trumps a feeling. Finding any other faults first also means you only have to send it back once.

Any news?

No news yet. Leica has the camera and I'm now just waiting to hear what they find. They did not give me an ETA so I'm using it as an opportunity to work on my patience :)

Wanted to give you an update to my case. Mine was declared DOA by Leica in Germany. Either full refund or new MP (my choice).

I think mine might have been a different issue than yours though.

How long will you wait for your new MP ?

What are full words for DOA ?

.. Once or twice I was actually worried I'd tear the film sprocket.  Doesn't feel right, although it may be totally "within tolerance"...

Sounds like there is an issue with the film transport mechanism, not the rewind knob.  i.e. it does not like to go in the opposite (rewind) direction.  Not normal, and hopefully Leica will address.  I have a bunch of Ms, including an MP, none have that issue.

Yikes! I'm eager to hear what they find with mine.

Doesn't new Leica gear ship with that little card showing the name and signature of the tech who did the final quality check?

So, I’m curious: when rewinding, is the issue from START of rewind, or once you get close to the end of rewinding? My MP has some additional tension at the end of the rewind (basically the last few frames), but not at the beginning. I chalked this up to a tension so that the spool doesn’t unroll or something.

Mine was difficult to turn (with film loaded) throughout. It may have gotten a small amount more difficult at the end, but I didn't think it felt "normal" during the rest of the rewind. Still waiting for word from Leica.

Following up on this, I received the MP back from Leica today, and the rewind knob now works like butter. It feels "right", now"

The receipt only said that they replaced 2 parts: "roller" and "leather covering". I would not have minded a little more clarification around what the actual problem was, but I'm happy with the repair.

I had this problem on my M-A. Happened to watch a you tube on how to load film on the M-A and realized I was loading the film wrong (In my defense I was only proficient at the old style film loading (M3)). I was jamming the film leader into the quick connect spool instead of just letting it take care of it on its own. Voila, rewind works like a dream. My two cents.

What about you mentioned that the rewind knob is tight to pull up and sometimes is  stuck in halfway,

was this fixed  by Leica as well?  or this is not treated as defect by Leica? thx
