Xue Posted December 5, 2021 Share #1 Posted December 5, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sorry to bother you guys. I have the 18mm. But in the forum people all say it is worse than the 18 56 and not to leica standard. Can any one tell me more detail about this? What I need is the leica color. Does the colour differs a lot? Advertisement Posted December 5, 2021 Posted December 5, 2021 Hi Xue, Take a look here Whyvis 18mm worse than 18 56?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guytou Posted December 5, 2021 Share #2 Posted December 5, 2021 Some find that this 18mm is not good ... It might not be as sharp as the 23 or 35 in the corners and at full aperture but it's still a good lens. I own the 18-56 and the 18 and I find that the latter is doing quite well. We can also see many images of this TL18 mm with a Flickr search and some are at the opening f. 2.8 : Welcome, dear visitor! jaapv Posted December 5, 2021 Share #3 Posted December 5, 2021 No the colours don't look different. A lens is always a compromise between size, price, lens speed and quality. Tha 18 is a very good lens with the emphasis on small size. The 18-56 is an optimisation of size, quality and price and less of size. Trying to judge lenses on one aspect only is foolish. If you want a small, but still very good lens to make your camera set compact, get the 18. If you want a class-leading standard zoom and care less about size, get the 18-56. In both cases you will find the image quality more than sufficient.
wda Posted December 5, 2021 Share #4 Posted December 5, 2021 You are wasting your time. You are already confused by contrary advice. How will you decide where lies the truth? My experience is that I have never owned, or used, a bad Leica lens. Even lenses from the 1930s and 1940s are still useable today. But you are comparing contemporary lenses. Performance differences will be extremely difficult to discern. Avoid listening to the loudest voices.

Pixel and MTF peeping leads to silly conclusions.

nicci78 Posted December 5, 2021 Share #7 Posted December 5, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) TL lenses quality according to my vision of Leica standard : Exceptional : none Excellent : APO-Macro-Elmarit-TL 60mm Very very good : Summilux-TL 35mm & APO-Vario-Elmar-TL 55-135mm & Super-Vario-Elmar-TL 11-23mm Very good : Vario-Elmar-TL 18-56mm Good : Summicron-TL 23mm Fair : Elmarit-TL 18mm Your mileage may vary. But I owned each of them at one time of my CL life. TL 18mm is certainly one of the worst modern Leica lens. But at pancake standard it is quite good. No matter what, such thin lens cannot beat bigger ones. Physic’s law etc…
jaapv Posted December 5, 2021 Share #8 Posted December 5, 2021 That is something quite different. Can 18 56 shoot like night photos?
jaapv Posted December 5, 2021 Share #12 Posted December 5, 2021 Depends on the night photos - I have had very pleasing results under normal street lighting. Just use high ISO and Topaz DeNoise.

Buy Summicron-TL 23mm : quite compact, sold with a very effective hood and it can gather f/2 worth of light, instead of f/4 for TL 18-56mm at 23mm. Equal two stops more light Edited December 5, 2021 by nicci78

nicci78 Posted December 5, 2021 Share #19 Posted December 5, 2021 Really Q2 is the best. You cannot go wrong with it. IQ is amazing. And you really got four lenses into one : 28mm f/1.7 + 35mm f/2 + 50mm f/2.8 + 75mm f/4.5 Crop mode really works superbly.
nicci78 Posted December 5, 2021 Share #20 Posted December 5, 2021 Compare to Q2, both Elmarit-TL 18mm and Summicron-TL 23mm are really worst. Using a Summilux-Q 28mm f/1.7 since 2015 (original Q) change your perspective of what is an excellent lens. Q and Q2 are amazing. That’s why Q is the third best selling Leica of all time after M3 then M6. And Q2 wants that crown too.
