grahamc Posted October 31, 2021 Share #1 Posted October 31, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello I'm looking to purchase a 50:1.4 v3 (E46 - Pre-ASPH) at some point. They do seem reasonably hard to come by in the right condition etc though . If anyone owns it alongside either the v3 or v4 cron I'm hoping you may be able to post a side-by-side pic to illustrate the size differences. I have the v3 / v4 Cron so either would be fine. Thanks in advance of any help ! Cheers Graham

(From right: 1st - E46 Lux / 3rd - V4 Cron / 4th - V3 Cron) The V3 and V4 Summicrons are tiny, especially for their aperture. But so is the E46 Summilux for it's aperture. With its built-in hood it'd be my one-lens choice. If you're using lens hoods I'd say the E46 is arguably the most compact choice.
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Erato Posted October 31, 2021 Share #3 Posted October 31, 2021 A reference to the OP -- from my understanding the 50 Lux Pre-A aka. V3 sizing is quite similar while comparing with 35 Lux FLE., FYR. Great, thanks for this. What is between the E46 Lux and the V4 cron... Lux v2 perhaps ? if so they are a really nice size aren't they. Guessing that it's heavier than the E46 though from memory Cheers G Edited October 31, 2021 by grahamc

Taken from my note, nude no caps : Summilux 50mm chrome E43 (MFD 1m) , 297g same E46 (MFD 70cm, year 2000) sliding hood black anodized, 275g my first heavy weight, 1995 made E46 titanium coated, 368g screw-in vented hood replacing the nice 12586 Welcome, dear visitor! Believe it or not they're the same weight in Black and Chrome, with the latter being heavier due to all brass construction.

grahamc Posted October 31, 2021 Author Share #12 Posted October 31, 2021 Thanks very much everyone. considering v2 in black is the same weight as the E46 , but also has a smaller shape profile - is there a good reason why I should be looking for a E46 v3 rather than v2 ? the MFD I am aware of (0.7 v3 and 1m v2) I understand they are generally considered to be the same optically although I believe it was @lct(sorry if I’m wrong) ho mentioned that Leica informed him that small changes had been made . considering that despite this they are incubator aimilar enough to be considered the “same”, in practical use is there anything else I need to be aware of in these 2 version comparisons ? I’d always been looking for a v3 but the v2 looks kinda, erm, cute ?!!
a.noctilux Posted October 31, 2021 Share #13 Posted October 31, 2021 Graham, no free lunch 😉. In use I would say the E43 is much more pleasant and feels smoother.Maybe it had more use or just the long throw of the focus ring or the scalloped ring. My other E46 are not bad in use but shorter throw of focus ring makes the use 'faster' or less precise, depending on one's taste. The too short sliding hood is always there but hardly efficient. When I need better protection, I use screw-in E46 vented hood.

I think I’d prefer the shorter throw and the shorter MFD of the E46 then thanks for the explanation
lct Posted October 31, 2021 Share #15 Posted October 31, 2021 Sure v2 is a nice lens but mine tends to stay at home for 3 main reasons: 1m MFD, long focus throw and big hood. It is not a flare prone lens though so a hood is not requested generally but i'm not fond of protective filters so i prefer a vestigial built-in hood to no hood at all. IQ wise i did not notice significant differences between v2 and v3. Perhaps a bit more CA on v2 but i would need to do side by side comparos to be sure. For an interesting review of v2 see https://www.47-degree.com/focus-shift/summilux50mme43.

Yes I think for the things I use a 50mm for the 0.7 would be handy. i do like the cosmetic look / size profile of the v2 but overall sounds like the e46 will be the way to go for my uses. Thanks I will check the review also
grahamc Posted February 15, 2022 Author Share #17 Posted February 15, 2022 Hi Everyone I bought a 50:2 v4 (Tabbed) which I am really happy with. The upper barrel unscrews quite easily from the bottom half of the barrel (easy enough for it to occasionally loosen whilst doing other things such as changing filters). When this happens I've been screwing it back in and tightening it up - I assume this is fine to do ourselves and won't affect lens calibration etc ? Thanks !
