I find it rather on the high side... Me too. Right now, Leica bei Meister/Hamburg, or Leica Berlin have an offer for "demo" bodies at 3795 € with full 2 years guaranty. Just have to know exactly if it is an real demo or, my preference, a refurbished body. In the last case, i would not hesitate. Otherwise, i had personally twice the opportunity to get an almost new one at 3200 (owner fall very sick) and another one for 3550 with one extra battery and more stuff, like 2 SD cards 2 Go, etc. But this last one was from Nov. 2006 and had to make a small trip to Solms for hardware upgrade. dougdarter Posted September 3, 2007 Share #5 Posted September 3, 2007 I guess it depends on where you live. I paid Eu 3400 for mine, ex demo, and I've seen them selling for a little less in the UK from dealers, as second user.
luigi bertolotti Posted September 3, 2007 Share #6 Posted September 3, 2007 An aquaintance of mine got offered a mint used M8 for 3800 Euro ( by a reputable dealer).. Your opinion on the price? I find it rather on the high side... Too high, I'd say too : 100 or 150 less than the "street price" for a real NEW does not worth, no matters how really mint it is. As a dumb rule, I'd say that for products like M8 (with a rather well controlled "price chain"), one can consider an almost new, mint, less than 1 year old, for 20% less of the official price list. fotografr Posted September 3, 2007 Share #7 Posted September 3, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Too high, and there is always the possibility it is one of the early ones with a SDS in its future. I would only buy late release M8s.
Guest tummydoc Posted September 3, 2007 Share #8 Posted September 3, 2007 Prices for official Leica Code U/demo M8s have been hovering in the $4200 range in the states. These do not entitle the buyer to 2 free IR filters, so one ought to add at least $200 to the cost. $4400 effectively, with 1 yr warranty. Paying $400 more for a full additional year of warranty on such a potentially expensive-to-sort camera was a no-brainer. Even now that the new price has risen another $150 it still seems like buying a demo is false economy, although if the demo prices hold steady whilst the new price rises to nearly $6000 as it's expected to do in less than a month, demos may become the only affordable way in-to M8-dom for more people. Buying from a private party interjects the issue of Leica's policy that warranties are non-transferable. One would have to have no ethical qualms about filing a fraudulent warranty claim posing as the original owner, and be prepared to carry the charade to its fullest given the likelihood that sending an M8 for sorting could involve e-mail, letters and/or telephone followup with Leica's service department.
