Thanks Shawn. The effect is more noticeable for me when I'm using my 35, 50 or 90mm lenses, have you noticed anything shooting at the other end of your zoom?

Hello All,

I've been having some issues with my SL2 and I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing anything similar?

When the IBIS and mechanical shutter are both activated I get motion blur when the shutter is set between 1/80th-1/160th second. I've done a bit of testing and the issue disappears when the electronic shutter is used, the images are also sharper at the shutter speeds mentioned with mechanical shutter on and the IBIS turned off. The effect is present using my APO SL35, as well as my adapted M lenses.

and what settings are you using for IBIS?

I assume the issue also appear only in certain shutter speed range (typical for shutter shock).

Yes, but it's not the typical shutter shock, because it only appears when IBIS is turned ON...Like I mentioned before, LEICA is aware of this issue. But NOTHING happens...🙁

Agreed, it is not typical shutter shock, but most likely caused by the first mechanical curtain. In theory, EFCS should fix it.

You asked about other focal lengths.

1st photo Leica 35 SL @ f5.6 1/80  cropped, hand held, ibis, mechanical shutter

2nd Leica vario‑elmar‑r 75-200 @ 75mm f4.5 1/80 hand held, ibis, mechanical shutter

Thanks For the information Mike. I'm surprised I haven't heard more about the issue, the results my camera produces between 1/80 to 1/125 sec are pretty bad. Maybe some SL2's are effected less?

If you read through the threads on  long lenses (not a wideangle like 75 mm  ), you'll find that the issue is mentioned quite often. In fact, as soon as a poster complains about soft results (and suspects a focus issue ;) ) the first advice he gets is to use electronic shutter. On long lenses the problem can even persist throughout the shutter speed range. The thing is that IBIS - or OIS - cannot compensate for the frequency generated by shutter shock; if it tries to compensate it may make matters worse. This is even the case with the camera on a tripod. On a side note, Panasonic has a setting that will. activate electronic shutter for the speeds affected automatically and advises in the manual to use it as the default setting.

Indeed. Why LEICA didn't implement such a setting in FW 3.0??? Hope dies last...🙁

Most cameras enable electronic shutter automatically at high speeds only. Are you thinking of electronic first curtain instead of electronic shutter?

Thanks for the information jaapv, I suppose I'm fortunate to gravitate to wider angle lenses. I suspect the Ibis is in many cases making matters worse as I did notice some improvement when Ibis was off.

Please share situations where you saw improvements with IBIS off. Thanks!
