Alan Zheng Posted October 12, 2021 Share #1 Posted October 12, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi guys, I recently sourced a brand new Leica silver chrome 12504 style hood from eBay, I’m trying to unscrew the front section from the base, but it’s very much stuck, any of you had similar experience? Or solution :)? I’ve tried rubber gloves, wd40…. Still stuck… thanks in advance..

Herr Barnack Posted October 12, 2021 Share #2 Posted October 12, 2021 (edited) If the lens hood is not stuck on the lens, Aero Kroil may help: https://www.amazon.com/Kano-Aerokroil-Penetrating-aerosol-AEROKROIL/dp/B000F09CEA/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=aero+kroil&qid=1633997533&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&smid=A2UDNPGKURPVSY&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyRzlJRzA1Mk9ENVlDJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMjcwNTEyTjJTRVpOSVU1Uk0wJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA2MTE4MTYyOFJRV1RDUzVSTU5IJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ== If the lens hood & ring are stuck together, a pair of silicone jar lid removers might work: https://www.amazon.com/Norpro-566-Silicone-Jar-Opener/dp/B003D8EGXS/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=silicone+jar+lid+opener&qid=1633997398&s=home-garden&sr=1-4 Use one gripper on the ring and one on the lens hood to get a better grip. Whether you use Aero Kroil or WD-40, wash both the lens hood & ring thoroughly in warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly and dry them completely. You don't want to get any kind of oil on or in your lens. lct Posted October 12, 2021 Share #3 Posted October 12, 2021 Same tip as for filters: Put the hood upside down on a rubber surface (eg a rubber sole) and turn the hood anti clockwise while pressing it gently onto the rubber. May work perfectly... or not .
Pyrogallol Posted October 12, 2021 Share #4 Posted October 12, 2021 These hoods are not well designed, they are not strong enough to cope with a slight deformity. I bought a well used one and could not get it apart as it was slightly deformed from a perfect circle. I had to put the end with the two spring clips in a vice before I could finally unscrew the two halves. It works now but I avoid screwing the two halves too far back together. 250swb Posted October 12, 2021 Share #5 Posted October 12, 2021 It's usually the case that the harder you grip a filter or hood the more you deform it because you can't grip it equally around all its circumference, so lct's method is the best one to try first. If it still sticks I'd put something like a pair of kitchen tongs through two of the vent slits as a key and that may give enough purchase to unscrew the other part.
wda Posted October 12, 2021 Share #6 Posted October 12, 2021 Get the vendor to swap it for one which will dismantle.
Alan Zheng Posted October 12, 2021 Author Share #7 Posted October 12, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks guys for all the advice, swapping it with another one is not an option as the silver chrome 12504 is quite rare, and I don’t think it’s still being produced. I tried pressing the hood against a silicone mat used for baking, it doesn’t want to come apart, I think I will try the kroil and jar opener Herr Barnack suggested. thanks again! Capuccino-Muffin Posted October 13, 2021 Share #8 Posted October 13, 2021 The identical BP 12452 does not unscrew. Are you sure the silver version can be unscrewed at all? Are you sure it is indeed a 12504?
Alan Zheng Posted October 13, 2021 Author Share #9 Posted October 13, 2021 You are right, I just got in touch with Leica, they told me the 2 sections are partially glued together. Therefore cannot be separated, but I’m going to ask them what glue was used, as I’m sure the anatomy of the hood remains indifferent than the detachable version. Alan Zheng Posted October 15, 2021 Author Share #10 Posted October 15, 2021 In case anyone’s interested, Leica product support got back to me indicating that they used a 2-part epoxy to partially glue the lens hood together. I could imagine something like JB weld. Maybe I’m gonna have to live with it

Otherwise China-made copies can be found on e**y as well. Edited October 15, 2021 by lct
