Camera I will never sell (unless something life threatening) is the M9M, I'm lucky enough to have one with the newer sensor and under 5k clicks

All my other cameras could be sold at anytime either to upgrade or replace some kit or simply to fund lifes expenses.

I have a humble collection of Voigtlander lenses in M mount & along with the M9M will remain with me as long as I can.

Other cameras I own are -:

Leica CL

Leica M9 (old sensor, replaced cover glass)

Mamiya ZD

Nikon D7500

30 that you need to sell?

Trade them in to a Leica dealer.  You may get as much as $30 USD for the lot of them.  🙄

That's why I'm keeping my M-P 240 Safari kit.  The trade-in "offers" I have been quoted  are nothing other than invitations to financial buggery, with me on the receiving end.

Yep. At least 30.

I do have a store that sell some of my gear on consignment. But I haven’t taken anything in for well over a year due to COVID lockdowns and other reasons, mostly laziness. I do have aplan. Just need to instigate it….

Here, it’s nearly impossible to get a trade. Most places don’t offer it. It’s also difficult to rent stuff that’s not “mainstream”. That’s why I have so much unused gear lying around.

****************************

I don’t know if I have any cameras I wouldn’t sell? I have a few I miss sometimes, like my XPan but I know I’d not be using them. For now I know I’m not shooting with anything less than 40MP. So all the 24MP stuff could go with no regrets.

Sounds like you are in a tough spot.

I miss my XPAN too - even though I was not using it much.  I sold it on ebay to pay for my Q2, which I do not regret; the Q2 is my everyday carry and at present, my most used camera.

The XPAN is a unique camera - I see that they seem to be readily available on ebay and the prices seem to have stopped climbing for the time being.  I'm hoping to get another XPAN II one day...

The real issue is with the rate of technological progress on computer & consumer electronics products. This coupled with business driven motive makes a 10 years old digital camera equal to a 50 years old ice car in specification & performance. Putting on an engineer's hat, I see all the advantages that electronics hardware and firmware brings in technology advancement and lower cost in making them in bulk. However the downside of electronics means replacement over repair / recondition.

Compare a 10 years old M9 to M10R, both cost equilivalent in purchase price when new. If you factor in inflation, the M10R is likely to cost less. To the end user, the Image resolution, ISO, Dynamic range of the M10R clearly excels over the M9. Of course there is always the argument of CCD sensor look vs CMOS sensor looks which is personal. Judging by product sales volume, it is clear that CMOS sensor is certainly no less popular. At this age, the M9 likely runs into image sensor replacement difficulity since Kodak Eastmen sensor maker already has been out of production and out of business for quite a while. Unless due to other reasons, ditching an older M for a newer M makes logical sense since used Ms do enjoy higher resale value than other equal value digital cameras. However the digital M is a very special camera as it stays minimalist as a manual focused camera. I do see myself keeping my M10R longer over my earlier digital Ms as the M10R is almost perfect for it's intended use as a manually focused rangefinder digital camera. The SL series will have more crucial factors over AF & ISO performance since it's photography & video application is wider + the competitive advantage or disadvantage over other Mirrorless camera makers stays slim. So I still see myself selling off my SL2 when the replacement appears in two years time. Hopefully I will keep my M10R longer till M12 appears unless M11 is a game changer.

SL 601 was my first camera I ever bought and I immediately fell in love with. After SL2 was released, I purchased it, but I never felt that connection as I had with the original SL, which I decided to keep, pack in the box and never sell. I know digital cameras won't have the longevity as the old film cameras, due the discontinuation of software updates, obsolete connectivity, electronic parts, and I will probably sell my SL2 and other cameras once I upgrade them with the new ones, but that original SL is more than a camera to me.

Also, when I'm looking at all my best photos, most were made with SL 601. Brings a lots of memories when I, once in a while take that camera out of the box to get some fresh air. I would love my kids to have it one day, but I'm aware it's not the same thing as it was with the old film cameras that some parents passed to their kids.

I have a couple questions here:

1. What's your "more than a camera", that you'll never sell?
2. What you did with your SL after upgrading to SL2/SL2-s?
3. What's your thoughts on keeping digital cameras instead selling them?

1. I won’t sel my film Ms although they get little use, but one in a whiile I shoot a TriX roll in each of them

Above all, what I won’t sell are my Leica M Lenses :)

I have too many of them but every  one of them happen to be adapted to some situations…

2. I haven’t sold my SL but did not upgrade it : I stil use it with a lot of pleasure : with the SL lux 50 as an all-rounder, and as a good platform for my Noct .95 and my ‘lux 75

3. I have a « special » relationship with a lot of my M Lenses but use the digital bodies as tools and will upgrade when needed. RIght now however, I am pretty sure the M10M will fit my needs for a very long time. I am thinking of selling my digital CL system soon.

I still have my first ever Leica, an R3 and will never part with it. In the past 18 months I have sold some Leica gear. M8, M240, M6 a few R lenses, mainly to fund an SL system. The digital M’s loose money, unlike the analogue M’s which make  money. I love the SL 601 so much I have lost my initial temptation to buy an SL2 S. The SL Summicrons and the Vario lenses just blow my mind. Using R and M lenses on the SL body is also a joy. The SL system reinvigorated my passion for photography.

I have a few more items to sell. 😁

Leica Miami offers 80% of FMV for Leica gear as part of new Leica gear purchase (they recently ran a promo for 90% on selected items).   PopFlash offers 80% return on consignment sales.

I'm sure it is only during COVID times. During pre-covid times, Leica collects full payment upfront know as 'Pre Order'.

No, 80% is their trade-in policy toward new gear purchase (70% for outright purchase).  Other policies apply to new gear purchases where no trade is involved.
