djm Posted October 8, 2021 Share #1  Posted October 8, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi,I'm having an issue with a Leica MP where the far left side of the frame is underexposed.I took the camera to a shop here in Austin and they mentioned that the shutter was slightly off at 1/500th and 1/1000th of a second, but they did not necessarily see how that would cause this issue.I've done some testing and notice the problem occurring specifically at those speeds. It is also much more visible on wider lenses (very noticeable with 24mm or 28mm). Any advice on how to tackle this? Standard CLR?Thank youDouglas Welcome, dear visitor! Topsy Posted October 9, 2021 Share #2 Â Posted October 9, 2021 I have an M2 that was doing the same but worse, I sent it off for CLA and that fixed it. Apparently because the previous owner hadn't used it for many years the shutter had not been exercised so was siezing up, maybe because of dried/congealed lube, in any case the CLA fixed it. Some say thar repeated exercising of the shutter can work, I'm not convinced.
TomB_tx Posted October 9, 2021 Share #3  Posted October 9, 2021 Yes, a good CLA is needed. It looks like either the leading shutter curtain is sluggish starting or the trailing curtain moves a bit before it should start - likely the former. Essentially the slit between the moving curtains is narrower in that region. I’d contact Don Goldberg at DAG Camera Repair. With ultra wide lenses the light rays extend under the body frame mask on the edges, making the actual image on the film a bit wider, so this extra bit of width would show this shutter issue more. Chuck Albertson Posted October 15, 2021 Share #5 Â Posted October 15, 2021 Shutter bounce. I experienced it on a new M6, and Leica NJ fixed it in a week (warranty repair). I don't recall if it was a full CLA, but that's likely what you're looking at.

TomB_tx Posted October 16, 2021 Share #8 Â Posted October 16, 2021 Gus did great work on my M6 several years ago, and also a nice restoration on a Canon IVSB.

I think shutter bounce usually results in overexposure on one edge rather than the underexposure seen here.

I believe that depends on which shutter curtain bounces. When I had the same problem as djm (underexposure along the left edge), the Leica tech called it shutter bounce.
