Caveat to the new foveon sensor as Mr Yamazaki had pointed out in his interview that it isnt as 'versatile' a sensor; namely mentions the downside of its performance in low light is still an issue it seems

He did mention the new foveon  X3 sensor will be ready by sometime this year..8:10 🤔

However I do question it's development since the L mount isnt built around the foveon system but more than likely be the other way around.

Mr Yamazaki has said in the interview that the likes street photography, which bodes well to the direction of the company's l future camera development in keeping in line to Fp's compact style and shooting that would favor Mr Yamazaki's favourite photography genre.

If the sensor and its computing is as power hungry as the DP Merrills, hopefully the camera will be  bigger to accommodate a bigger battery.
Ibis would be nice either to compensate the lowlight weakness and a mechanical shutter because i doubt the readout will be so fast like in the Nikon Z9...

Why do you think that the L-Mount lenses will work poor on that sensor?

Member jaap has reacted several times to this subject.

R-lenses and other SLR lenses could deliver the necessary optical distance. This sensor has several sensitive sensors over each other. The lightpath has to be controlled in a different way.

I think of my favorites here: the wide angles.

The limitations (battery, low ISO, proprietary software) don't bother me. For landscape work and some other more static or daylight applications, the image quality with Leica glass might be mind blowing. Compete with the Leica S? In some uses, maybe!

It'll be a tool I'd happily use for what it provides. I have a pocketful of batteries for my dp-Merrills and I think of them as rolls of film.

When you love a camera for what it is, you figure out how to use it to its greatest advantage...and fun.

May be. But the latest news of last week Sigma says they have problems with their supplier and not yet decided what kind of AF they will use.
I assume when they do not have the sensor ready for AF it will take much longer for production. Maybe 24 or 25?

What worried me a bit was this statement: "KY: Ah, actually it’s quite early to be able to say anything about that. But as long as I see the market demand, and also in terms of the autofocus performance, the phase detection is the best solution. So I personally believe we need to implement phase detection AF, but we haven’t made a decision." If I imagine that no autofocus is implemented in the prototype yet, then it will definitely take another 2 years until the sensor is ready for series production, right? Or is something like PDAF Pixels just a little thing that is done quickly?

I put the japanese interview in google translate. There seems to be a step backwards with the sensor. Last year they were optimistic about getting a FF sensor ready and now they say they have gone back to smaller test sensors again.
I admire Sigma for their idealism and hope that one day it will pay off and they will bring a great product to the market.

They have been struggling with it since 2018 - I am not holding my breath; to me it is still vaporware. All lenses work poorly on a non-existing product

Just to keep the thread alive; (still) hoping for a full frame Foveon-type of sensor, in an L-mount body, to eventually materialise...

Keeping hope alive is a very good thing to do these days....
