Actually it's a repaint overhaul job from a great technician based in France. I am not sure if I can mention him, but I have to recommend him 100%, he is name is Jacques Fontana , his work and him as a person are incredible.

He called that finish Grain Black Paint, in real life doesn't look like Hammertone finish.

I bought my MP new in 2006.  It's never been carried in a case and often it's in a backpack with no padding or protection,  I've not abused it but I haven't been over protective of it either.

Some seem to brass very quickly and others, like mine, seem to be more durable.  It has a minor amount of brassing on the wind-on lever and the rewind knob and a tiny bit on the corners of the top plate step.  Some of the white script has yellowed but that's about the visible extent of nearly 16 years of regular use, 100's of rolls of film and a lot of miles travelled.

...this pretty much mirrors my experience with my BP MP, although mine was protected in a 14870 for almost 10 years. I have since set it free and it is now finally beginning to brass nicely in the right places.

Pictured is an original M-A black chrome base plate. Black paint MP base plates can be ordered from Leica .

My M4 that I had repainted. That poor thing was scratched up and had corrosion all over the place: it had sat in its leather case for who knows how long. Repainting meant all that got cleaned and refurbished. Most of it is black paint, but a few items such as the film rewind knob, strap lugs, and ISO dial are in black Cerakote to withstand more wear. She's a beaut that is finally getting some use. :)

Two black paint, one chrome, and a bit of nickel thrown in.
