In my opinion, the reason to go 75 is that the 90 is just to heavy for long walk outings. The 75 & 90 are both fantastic,. Again 75 is lighter, a bit easier to focus, and a few steps away  from the. 90 in ‘point of view”’.

Simple answer - 90mm elmar f4... Sharpest 90mm except for the apo.

If you not an EVF guy and don't like to deal with focus and recompose using external finder, I think 35mm lens is the widest FL you can get with M system.

As for 35/50mm combo, this is my curent M system setup. For my needs, 50mm are more useful than longer focal length. I can even live with only 35mm for the rest of my life.

Try it, if you don't like the 35/50 combo, then you can always trade your 50 with longer lenses such as 75 or 90mm.

I'm new to the forum, since the recent purchase of an M10-P to go with my Monochrom 246. I love the 75mm focal length (I have the Sumarit) and find that I much prefer its length to an 85 or 90. I have aVoigtlander 35, which I like a lot, but I'm looking for a 28, and am having trouble figuring out which one. Is the Cron rendering enough better than the Elmarit to be worth the price difference? Or is it just the extra stop? I'd love the 1.4 of the Lux, but it's just not in the budget after the M10.

Welcome here D Fuller.

If you like the Summarit-M 75mm, you would like the Elmarit-M 2.8/28mm, lens that I discovered when I found the Summarit-M lens line (I have 35/50/75 of those).

I use the Summicron-M 2/28mm for years before the 2.8/28mm asph. and I'm now happy with the lesser/lighter (less finder blockage is great in 28mm *) but nothing really to complain.

The Summicron-M 28mm is a very nice lens for it's specifications of fast f/2 one stop that the Elmarit-M would lack.

I consider that the Elmarit-M asph. is as good/nice in smaller package still gives very nice results from f/2.8.

So in my view, 2.8/28 can become a good companion of 75mm.

* Better yet the Too-Short Summaron-M 5.6/28 that I also use a lot 😇

I am currently shooting a 28/50 1.4 Summilux combo on an M10-P. I love both lenses*.

*However, I wear (pretty chunky) glasses and am frustrated with how much guessing (and getting it wrong) is happening when composing with the 28. Live view helps, but sort of takes the fun out of rangefinder shooting. I'm not sure how sustainable this is long-term.

I'm thinking about simply swapping the 28 for a FLE (or pre-FLE) to get a grip on composing.

The question is, rock the 35/50, or get a wider spread with the 35/75. The downside being the mass and heft of most 75mm, non-Summarit lenses (not really interested in the Summarit). I could do a 35/90 with a Macro Elmar but that may be too wide a spread.

Thoughts please!

Have you thought about surgical laser vision correction?  That would solve the above problem.

The Elmarit ASPH V2 ( the one with the metal hood with a cutout, not the plastic hood ) matches the Summicron and Summilux image quality vise. Obviously you loose either 1 or 2 stops of light, but the quality of the newest Elmarit is amazing and in no way inferior to the other ones. So its definitely no at choice about image quality but only about size, money and aperture.

That side the size difference to the Summicron with the hood attached is basically non existent,  49,4mm / 54mm with the Hood and 30,7mm / 41,4mm . The lens is smaller without the hood, but since the hood is kinda long, it makes the lens way bigger. But the hood is really nice.

The Elmarit makes a lot of sense when there is the option to buy the Summilux later down the road. The Elmarit and Summilux are a great set of 28s. While the Summicron,  Summilux combination didn't make any sense when buying a 28mm.

Obviously the Elmarit is way "cheaper" then the other two, so when its about the money the Elmarit is AMAZING since it offers the same image quality!

I would go for the Elmarit ASPH V2 only when its about the money and/ or when its all about getting the smallest lens and/ or when you only shoot at f5.6 - f22.

If I would want two 28mm at some point I would go with the Elmarit and the  Summilux . Because its a great set: One small lens, one big 1.4 lens. Buying  2.8/2 Lenses or 2/1.4 Lenses doesn't makes really sense to me, where 2.8 / 1.4 makes a lot of sense especially with the size difference.

When I would just buy one, I would buy the Summicron, f2 is great and the size difference to the Elamrit isn't huge when using the hood and one stop difference to the Summilux doesn't matter in the real world.

Obviously you could also just go for the Summilux at some point but I personally would regret if I would just bought it without owning the Elmarit.

That said I am a diehard 28mm shooter and owning two of them probably makes only sense for a few of us. But everyone needs to decide on their own wich focal length they prefer the most. At the end all three lenses are amazing and there is no "wrong" choice, only the right one.

This is really a wonderfully helpful reply. It really makes a lot of sense to think about these lenses this way. Thank you.

Hwve you used both of the ASPH versions? If you have, how much do you gain between the V1 and V2?

Get a Visoflex 020, you'll be able to see the entire coverage of the 28mm and it's not nearly as expensive as a new lens.

28/50 is an ideal combination, use your feet to fill in the 35mm gap, likewise a 21/35 combination (you see a Visoflex is not for just one lens, it opens up other opportunities), or 35/75 etc. The wider and longer you go the more a Visoflex makes sense both in framing and focus accuracy.

The newer Version Elmarit ASPH is better at pretty much everything like sharpness, distortion, flare resistance  etc but not by a ton. They are both great lenses and the ASPH V2 is just a bit better.

What makes difference is the corner sharpness, in comparison. The ASPH V2 has really really sharp corners, while the ASPH V1 has corners that are more blurry. The V2 is better wide open and stopped down. But you only notice a big difference this when Printing big, when zooming digitally or on high resolution Bodys like the M10-R / SL2.  ( The V2 is also sharper then the Summilux, wich should be expected )

The price difference here in Germany is 500 Euro ( V1 Used / V2 New (!) ) and I think its totally worth the spent the extra 500 euro. But that's pretty subjective since both lenses are great.

Since I own the V2 I dont use the V1 anymore because the V2 is better then the V1 in every expect and there is no drawback in using the V2. I also drastically prefer the Lens Hood on the V2.
