elansprint72 Posted August 31, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 31, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) ..... if only briefly. Folding my hefty six foot+ frame into the space normally occupied by skinny little racing driver types was not easy, even Derek Bell takes a while to get in and out, but he is older than me!!!! When I shut the door this became a very small space indeed. A rare privilege, I'm a lucky guy.

ctb Posted September 1, 2007 Share #4 Posted September 1, 2007 The late and great Gerry Marshall springs to my mind when I look at this photo Pete, not sure why ? YouTube - DTV presents Gerry marshall in Bertha
stuny Posted September 1, 2007 Share #5 Posted September 1, 2007 Pete - Really a fun shot, and clearly you're more agile than you modestly state since you could get in there before the self-timer tripped the shutter (at 12 seconds, not 2, I assume). elansprint72 Posted September 1, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted September 1, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Here is a shot that I took of Gerry at the hairpin at Mallory Park, shown it that U-tube link. This time he's in Baby Bertha, not Big Bertha. He was kind enough to make encouraging gestures with his fingers as he passed, from time to time. Great Bloke, sadly missed; his auto-biog "Only Here for the Beer" has been re-issued and is a good read.

I will have to get that and read it, I remember him fondly at Brands on an Aston Martin owners day race, he raced a fully blown vantage starting 10 laps after everyone else, but he still won, never to this day seen a driver as skilled, determined and talented as the late great Gerry Marshall. billh Posted September 1, 2007 Share #9 Posted September 1, 2007 Hi Pete, I’ve always thought those were particularly beautiful race carts - they were quite fast too! Are they still using them? Bill
elansprint72 Posted September 1, 2007 Author Share #10 Posted September 1, 2007 Bill, They have (I think) six complete cars which can run, they are not raced, just demos. I understand that the one I'm sitting in is off to the US soon; I guess it will appear at shows and race events and possibly dealerships too. The car in the background is an earlier (2001) car and is now in 2 seat configuration, special customers can be taken for scary rides! Chris, Hard to imagine that he used to race an Elan, there are some shots to prove this in the book- even one of him in mid-crash with bits flying everywhere. I've got many more shots of the big man, but they are from after I discovered how much easier it was to use an SLR. I said that the car in my shot was "Baby Bertha", on looking at the book, I find that it was actually called "Old Nail", (I think). The Berthas were much wilder looking. steed Posted September 4, 2007 Share #15 Posted September 4, 2007 Pete I am an absolute kid over racing from the 60's and 70's. It looks like you got some spectacular shots from that era. I would love to ogle the images if you get the chance to post. Finally, and this may not be a compliment entirely, you look much more fit than Marshall!
