earleygallery Posted June 30, 2021 Share #1 Posted June 30, 2021 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) A pinhole lens is the oldest lens ever designed. It's essentially free. It is totally resistant to scratching, cleaning marks or fungus. It's as compact and as light as possible. It's 'autofocus'. Discuss. Well, it's actually "pan-focus" - everything is focused (or more critically, unfocused) equally. Not that that is necessarily a bad thing. On my "road to Leica M," I bought a Voigtlander Bessa-L with the scale-focus 15mm f/4.5 v.1 in 1999. Set to f/8 and 2 meters, it was effectively a "pan-focus" lens. It was 1) liberating and fun, and really persuaded me I could happily work with a "window" rather than a "screen." But 2) rather quickly became just a "one-trick pony," especially when the light started to fade. I did keep it through the M8 era, as a compact 20mm-equivalent (the M8 cropped off its "Italian Flag" stains on digital) "Oldest = best?" Only on a Leica forum, dear boy. Then again, "It's all about the Mandler/Karbe.....hole?" That somehow doesn't have the same ring to it. Both: Fuji Velvia 50, 15mm Voigtlander Super-Wide-Heliar 15mm f/4.5 at f/8, 1/125th sec. Voigtlander Bessa-L,1999. Welcome, dear visitor! You could use the piece of black tape that's covering the Leica dot, but it's a tough one because then you're not stealthy any more.
