TL;DR: it's a rebadged phone sold for 5x the price. Japan only.

I wonder if it will be able to browse the internet, since they can't even make the Leica app work properly.

Jesus, what a joke

it's a Leica way to focusing giving the phone a "true Leica experience" with different exterior design and user interface (from PetaPixel website) - in sum, might be able to make phone calls, but don't count on wi-fi or Bluetooth abilities.

The lens cap is cute :)

They should focus on rebadging a Sony Ax camera. We'll get the best AF on the market with Leica colors. :P

5x the price is a bit steep, for sure, but it is not so egregious as some rebadging, in that at least the exterior and the interface are different. I also don't think it is a total joke to have Leica help design a phone. They clearly have very good user interface designers and lens designers. I extremely wedded to my iphone, unfortunately/fortunately, but if I were not, I think I would be happy to look at something Leica had done, as they seem to be good at making a streamlined user experience and I am sure that their input on the camera system was helpful. This is with the caveat of whether it works...unlike the Leica apps (which have not been much worse than any other camera remote app I have used), it sounds like this was done by Sharp with Leica's input. It seems like it might be a good way forward for them, if it works.

Little Japan is a test market for Leica. If the phone goes down well with the Japanese, other countries will follow suit.

But will it? I highly doubt it.

Personally I wouldn't touch an Android device with a barge pole, no matter how good the UI is, because Google.

I seriously doubt, no cell phone developed/designed in Japan in the past 10 years found a market out of Japan.

There's also more questions to ask. For how long will Leica support software updates? One year? Two? Will Leica support the next version of Android, whenever it drops?

I know I can get 4-6 years of software updates on my mobile, but given Leica's history with the disgraceful Fotos app, I have my doubts we'll see anything beyond 1 year of support.

If such ventures allow Leica to lower the prices of their cameras and lenses, so be it.

They won't lower the prices of their cameras, they'll just make more money. If the market can absorb a 8k camera, why lower the price?

Price are lowered only if a camera doesn't sell well, like the SL line. It went from 8000€ to 6500€ with the SL2 then 4500 with the SL2-s and now they are throwing in a M-L adapter for free if you buy the bundle with the 24-70, which is already discounted because it's a bundle.
