Ah thanks. I assumed both DNG and JPEG would be monochrome. So in a Q2M the raw (if it makes one) will be b/w completely.

Yes, of course. A monochrome sensor lacks the Bayer filter, which means that it cannot see colour. The advantage is that it does not need to demosaic and interpolate the sensor output, which makes for a substantial increase of resolution, it cuts out the optical errors, refraction and diffraction by the filter and it loses the filter factor increasing sensor sensitivity. On a monochrome sensor one pixel on the sensor will translate to one pixel in print.

I have toyed with getting an M10-Mono but it's very expensive and seems to be having some issues. I use an M-10, an SL2 and a CL with pleasure.  I don't want a Q Mono because I don't want a one lens camera. So I thought how wonderful it would be to have a CL Monochrome.  Cheaper than the M10M, able to use any lens I want, small, high quality - all the joys we love in the CL.  So I have two questions:

1. Am I the only one interested?

2. Is it possible to make a Monochrome CL sensor?

Thoughts are welcome!

George

Yes, it is possible, just not likely. But if money is a factor, just get a M9M or M246. They are all three different, but equally good. Personally I think that the output from the M9M is the best.

Beacause  it  is not exactly the same.
In fact, there is no way to make a converted image look like  Monochrom image,, even if the sensor is the same - like M9 and M9M.

You may be right ,  B&W converted from colour are generally better (and not almost)

If Leica made a CL2 with full frame sensor instead of APS-C one, they would certainly have a winner - both for color and monochrome.

Realistically, this will never happen because Leica would see a drop in sales for the Leica M and Q systems with such camera being released.

A CL2 with full frame sensor would not be a CL, as CL means Compact Leica. It would be a CSL - with a price and size to match.

You’re not completely alone. I’d be a bit tempted by a CL-M.

But if I had a choice between a CL-M, a CL2, & a Q2M, the CL-M would rank third. Given the Q2M does exist, I wouldn’t be sufficiently tempted by a CL-M.

No matter what it's called - I want such a camera… 👏🏻 🤭☺️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Call it whatever, let even the size be a big bigger than the CL - even with a price surcharge, such lens-interchangeable "CSL" would be a big success for sure.....I likely would consider, too.

Somewhat related but SLIGHTLY off topic:   I'm anxiously awaiting the CL2 announcement (should it ever come) and once I have one in hand, plan to convert my CL to either IR or monochrome.    Is conversion to mono even possible with the CL and would it be comparable to buying a CL-M should one be offered?

Back in the 1970's I did quite a bit of IR photography and really enjoyed it but of course B&W would in all probability get more use than IR.

You can probably ask these guys. Afaik there are more companies doing conversions, just do a google search

It’s called the SL2-S

No, the SL2 and SL2 S are the same size large cameras. The CL is small.& compact which is its appeal.  And the SL2 S isn't monochrome.

I was referencing the previous post - “let even the size be a big bigger than the CL”
