Why the desire to go back to an M if you like the EVF? What's missing from just using the SL2?

Good question, and the answer surprised me a bit. It has to do with the size and 'feel' of the SL2. It doesn't 'turn me on' like the m10 did despite SL2 being perfect on paper with nice EVF, IBIS (less relevant I think), ruggedness, L-mount alliance, looks. Also, most photographs you can nail with an iphone12, so the added effort required weirdly attracts me to the m line. However, I don't want multiple cameras, and I do enjoy some longer lenses for walkabouts in the woods early in the morning and I had too many missed focus shots. I think I'll wait and see what 11.11 brings before deciding. Until then I have to 'make do' with my SL2 ,o)

The sensor moves after focusing in MF mode so the focusing device should do no difference be it an RF or an EVF. Just a guess though.

Good point, agreed - effectively this is the same as using M lenses on an SL/SL2 and focusing in the EVF..

That’s why Leica has not produced a hybrid VF for the M; unacceptable compromises to both in attempts to date, according to execs.  Instead, the M excels with the RF, and only the EVF accessory is mediocre, at least so far.

IMHO, the idea of a backwards compatible improved EVF ( with increased resolution ? ) is a bit of a stretch unless an obsolescence issue has forced the current one off the market. Maybe removing GPS save some volume.

As for camera bodies,  the M10M and M10-R are only a year old .The SL2/SL2-S line may be selling a few bodies , but fewer lenses. The TL2 is dead, the CL and lens system seems to have stagnated.

A M11 with built in EVF and larger Q / SL type battery opens the gate for many new customer groups and uses.  The rangefinder cam turning could auto-magnification, with maybe a PIP view. With the M10M and M10-R continuing, traditional OVF-RF users are not upset . It seems a safe move to try it out now ... but most likely conservatism will prevail.

I think every Leica system has been pronounced dead at some point on this forum.

With the TL/CL/SL cameras all offering live view and EVF, the idea of an EVF based M is most certainly dead, if it ever had life …

In another thread I mentioned confirmation by a Leica dealer that a refreshed Visoflex will be introduced later this year and is backward compatible with the M10. Seems to me that makes an EVF unlikely on an M11?

I'd welcome this. Leica is recognizing that the M can be a rangefinder but also benefit from EVF as well. Unless they figure out how to nicely integrate range finding into the EVF, we're left with focus peaking for the manual focus lenses. The new 35mm Summicron with its close focusing that goes closer than the range finder can operate is a clear indication that they recognize M augmented is an important future direction. Visioflex plus the back screen work fine for me.

it is not only new M lenses with closer ability than 0.7m but also fast 50, 75 and 90mm lenses, not to mention Macro and 135mm, wide, extra wide....pretty much all lenses benefit form well implemented EVF be it external add-on or some future integrated EVF version.

I have a Fuji X100V and love the hybrid viewfinder and tilting screen. I'd say it easily has the best EVF of any camera I have used but it is still an EVF and I always opt for optical.

I love the rangefinder experience and use it most of the time on my M10. However, when shooting my 90mm in low light, I can have trouble viewing the rangefinder patch and my Visoflex 020 comes in handy with that. I just bought a 21mm lens and have been using my Visoflex solidly as I shoot with that lens but I'm awaiting delivery of a Voigtlander 21/25mm metal viewfinder as I want an optical view.

The 020 is too big and makes my M10 look like a Snork. I can't see the shutter dial properly and the EVF resolution isn't the best. But it does play an important role for some of us. Also, when my camera eventually needs a CLA, the EVF will be handy.

I hope a new Visoflex will be a bit smaller and with better resolution. It will never be better to look at than an optical VF but it has its own pros.

I also hope that there is less of a battery drain with a new one, possibly with the option to turn off GPS functionality.
