augustwest100 Posted May 22, 2021 Share #1 Posted May 22, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) This could have been placed in the M forum or the SL2 forum, or perhaps a new forum dedicated to people who realize they will never own just one Leica 😀 My question is this: for someone who has enjoyed the flexibility of the SL2S, but ALSO misses the simplicity of the M system, what would be a good combination of both? I can present a few scenarios. I enjoy several types of photography including street/urban landscape, candid natural light portrait, travel, and some macro. I find 24 megapixels to be more than enough, except for times I wish I could carry a Leica APS-C lens and use in crop mode. I also find the SL2S files to be the most malleable of any digital camera I have ever owned, and trust me, I’ve owned many! So I’ve been using the SL2S for everything, and with some success, but I miss the M primarily for street and leisure. I miss looking through a bright piece of glass at the actual world. I do not currently shoot video, though I have a filmmaking background. I will try to come up with a couple of extreme options: 1. Keep the SL2S and add an M 10 monochrom. This would in some ways be the best of both worlds - a very flexible all around camera with autofocus when needed and adapted M lenses when wanted, and a very quiet, peaceful monochrom camera to use for very personal work, to return to photography basics like light and shadow. For travel, I would tend to bring a small autofocus lens, like the sigma 45mm because I do not like carrying lots of gear while traveling. Or I could bring a 24-70 zoom, but have to deal with some extra weight. 2. Trade for a SL2 to get more usable APSC files, and get a M10P. In this case, I would perhaps get an APSC zoom lens for travel with the SL2, and use the M10P for street photography almost exclusively, and for occasional travel where a few light weight M jewels will be easy enough to carry. I opted against the SL2 in the first place because it felt counterintuitive to go for more megapixels just so that I could use in APSC mode! 3. Pick up an M9M or M246 used and enjoy until I can find an M10 monochrom used in a few years. Help me Obewan Kenobi Leica Jedi, you’re my only hope!

i-Leica Posted May 22, 2021 Share #2 Posted May 22, 2021 (edited) Keep SL2s and add a Q2Mono - life can be so simple or.... you can get SL2 with the new 28 SL lens as your only 1 cam + 1 lens. You have 28mm and 35mm with APSC crop. Edited May 22, 2021 by i-Leica

augustwest100 Posted May 22, 2021 Author Share #5 Posted May 22, 2021 I was trying to bring an M camera into the mix because my best lens is a Lux 35 M (which I would be able to use on both bodies) otherwise I could consider the Q2M. I am going to try some b&w conversions using my SL2S and actually print some images to see how they look.
hansvons Posted May 22, 2021 Share #6 Posted May 22, 2021 I‘m somewhat in the same boat. I own a SL2-S but would love to have another Leica for travel with a smaller footprint. I‘m thinking of getting a CL2 when it will be available with a 35mm Summicron M, or an M Monochrome with the Summicron, or a Q2 Monochrome, or a regular Q2. Because I can’t figure out my future path I keep shooting everything with SL2-S and the 24-90. What a great and versatile camera! Perhaps I don’t need anything more. FrozenInTime Posted May 22, 2021 Share #7 Posted May 22, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) I like the SL2-S live histogram , WYSIWYG framing and IBIS, but often find it too slow a process to capture accurate wide aperture focus with M lenses ( but better than any other EVIL camera ). With the M10M , I find myself taking preview shots to check clipping and/or framing , or play safe with loose framing and EV backoff - but optical RF focusing speed wins hands down for anything that is not made from stone. I’m not sure I want even the smaller SL24-70 zoom for travel - tourist with big camera stereotype and all ; but do find the small, light and discrete CL with 18-56 very good for walking and cycling. If I had to make an all time minimalist cut from all camera and lens possibilities out there, I feel a M10-R with 35/1.4 would be just fine, as the SL2-S and M10M really are specific use tools. FlashGordonPhotography Posted May 23, 2021 Share #8 Posted May 23, 2021 Buy the M10M and a CL. Done. All problems solved. Gordon p.s. Some underestimate the CL. Possibly the best APSC sensor/lens combo currently available. 2

Not better or worse, just different. Gordon
chris_tribble Posted May 23, 2021 Share #10 Posted May 23, 2021 (edited) I am very very happy with SL2 and M10. My one question at the moment is if I need my second M10 body. In the past I used 28 and 50 on two separate M bodies + 70-200 L series 2.8 zoom on Canon 5D mk4 for reportage / performance / event. It was a great combination. I’m now beginning to think I’ll need 2 SL2 bodies with 24-90 and 90-280 for this kind of work and landscape, plus the APO 75 and 35 for portrait / people jobs. I’ll be keeping a single M for street and travel with a choice of lens (28 / 35 / 50) for different purposes. decisions, decisions… Edited May 23, 2021 by chris_tribble
augustwest100 Posted May 23, 2021 Author Share #11 Posted May 23, 2021 Today, I tried using my SL2-S with my 35mm Lux M walking around the city. The goal was to see if I could use hyperfocal and pretend I had an M. It wasn't quite the same as an M. The grip was nice, but the viewfinder is not "see through." Has anyone compared the 35 Lux M on both an M body and on an SL2 or SL2S body? Wondering how much performance I am not getting by using on the SL2S. I guess I'm sorta hijacking my own OP! The SL2-S is growing on me, but it looks like you can really do some cool things with the M10M. What settings do you shoot your M10M with?

M10M: Manual or aperture priority / auto ISO (min shutter speed 2x focal length). If it’s bright out, with AP I set exposure comp to -.7 to -1.0 because it’s both easy to blow out highlights (which you can’t recover) and really easy to retrieve shadows in the details. I had a used M10P which I traded in against the SL2S - I prefer B&W but still needed color and wanted video, flexibility and low light performance. AF is also nice for event photography. Kept my M lenses to use with the M to L adapter, and popped for the 24-70 bundle and the 45 Sigma as well (great travel combo).

I love the 45 (I call it little Siggy), and I tried the Sigma 24-70 2.8, the Sigma 28-70 2.8, the 24-70 Panny, and the excellent but heavy 24-90 Leica. I think for me the Leica 24-70 might be best balance of weight and quality. I tried the M10M in the store and brought some images home on my memory card. It led me to start printing again on my Epson printer. Haven't done that in a long time!

IkarusJohn Posted May 23, 2021 Share #18 Posted May 23, 2021 (edited) I have the SL, and one SL lens, the 24-90 zoom. Rugged, weather proof and a great single lens camera. If I want to take one M camera as a companion, it’s my Monochrom. I’m sure the M10-M is as good, if not better. It would be my one M choice to go with the SL. Of the M lenses, I’m not a 35mm fan, so the choice would be the 28 Summilux-M and either the 50 APO Summicron-M or the Summilux ASH. For cycling, I have a TL2 and 11-23 zoom (I think the TL2 is a better featured camera than the CL) - if that’s too bulky, I use the 28 Summaron (42mm equivalent field of view). I hope this helps - your SL2-S and 24-90, M10-M and your 35. Done! John Edited May 23, 2021 by IkarusJohn

I don't need megapixels, but I like the dynamic range of M10M and M10R, and the price of the M10P may be a little better
