Hello folks,

Im a new owner of the Sl2-S and consider to get the new Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 for the L-Mount system.

I heard that the sigma has quite heavy distortion at 28mm and pincushion effect at 70mm. I read somewhere that the Sony E-Mount version has to be corrected in LR for example,
but that the L-Mount version did automatic correction in the camera (in the Test they were using the Panasonic S1).

So, does that mean that the SL2-S also corrects the lens already in camera? What is your experience?

Thanks in advance for every advice.

Jono Slack took his shots for the review last summer, so he can't say from direct experience, but he CAN ask those who know.  I think he said the SL2-S already has a profile and the SL2 will as well when that firmware is updated next month.   After all, selling the lens with a new SL2 or SL2-S as a kit (to avoid the 25% Trump tax on German optics that Biden has yet to roll back) is part of the marketing strategy, so I certainly think it will be covered in both cameras.  Can't say when the SL will catch up.

A tougher question is whether the L-mount consortium will be gentlemen enough that a Sigma 28-70 will have all the same privileges as a Leica 28-70, which is optically the same.

Incidentally, distortion correction is done very openly, by metadata calculated at each focal length and saved in the DNG or other raw file, where anyone with a text editor can read it.  So if the Pana S1 does the correction properly, and Jono's pictures don't show any problem with distortion, then that issue was settled at least a year ago.

Thank you for the quick response. I will definitely consider the Sigma then. I was mainly looking for a good 28mm lens for my Sl2-S but the 28mm 1.4 is much bigger and I also wanted to have a small zoom lens.

The 28mm 1.4 from Sigma will be a future alternative for a Leica Q, since I like the natural look of 28mm with shallow DOF.

Well, yes that it true and I also hope so. But it seems that still an argument for the Leica lens would be the better power management, since Leica stated that other than Leica L-Mount lenses will need more power. I also have the feeling that I quickly run out of battery after 300 shots or so with my Sigma 35mm F2 DG DN.

  • 1 year later...

I'm looking to buy my first (and probably only) zoom lens for my SL2-S I almost got the Sigma 24-70 when I found out the compact and lighter 28-70...does anyone here tried them both? how they perform??
I know 28mm is not 24, but the portability for me is quite important (also, I have a Zeiss 25mm 2.8 prime too!).
Sharpness, rendition, distortion, still the same?

There is no Leica 28-70.

Sigma 28-70 has lower performance than Sigma or Leica 24-70 but is lighter and less expensive.

Modern lenses are increasingly built with SDC (software distortion correction) in mind. It allows for building lighter lenses with better IQ. Do not evaluate those lenses before SDC. The final result is what matters.

In the case of L-mount, most often (always?), the correction data is stored in the raw file as parameters (built-in profile), but the raw data is not modified. Adobe software automatically applies built-in profiles (vignetting, SDC, etc.), which is mandatory :(.
