I am not  sure where to post this question. As a new Leica M user, I discovered that the camera does not work with the base plate off and realized that there is a small magnet in the plate.

What exactly does it do and would any magnet work?

The magnet trips a switch that lets the camera know the base plate is attached. Without the baseplate the camera won’t function. There are half cases and grips other than the original Leica that have a magnet.

These magnets are available for pence for ten on the 'bay. Always take one on a trip as it is not unknown for them to make a break for freedom, and as said, no magnet no working camera.

Hello Everybody,

Given that it matters which end "+" or "-" is up when a person replaces a battery: When a person replaces the magnet: Does it matter whether you glue in the new magnet with the "North" side or the "South" side up?

Best Regards,

Michael

Well, you can lose them 50 times for 5 $...

And a tube of Silicon Glue.

Thanks Jaap.  I've ordered a "slab" of magnets as insurance.  All best.

No - it makes no difference. Although it might in Australia and NZ.
