I recently purchased a used 50mm Summilux-M ASPH. Just got it yesterday and compared to my summicrons 90mm, 50mm and 35mm, the aperture ring seems very loose. The aperture blades work fine, picture quality is excellent. Its just the aperture ring has a lots of play.

I've done some searching and finding mixed messages about whether this is common, including some here on the forum about what does "loose" mean. Some say it is common with the 50 Summilux and built with looser rings than other Leica Lens, others say it isn't. With that I decided to do a video of my "loose" aperture ring. Take a look and let me know your thoughts.. If you have experience with the 50lux was the aperture ring similar to mine. If you've had this issue what is the best alternative to repair it?

Thanks

Can you feel the ring click into the various apertures? I don't have a lux but both my 35 and 50 crons (both v5) show a bit of play when set.

It's hard to gauge the looseness based on your video, but it doesn't seem all that extreme to me. The best way to be sure may be to visit a Leica store and compare with the lenses there.

plaidshirts, yes you can feel and hear the ring click at each aperture setting. I was thinking the same, visit my local Leica store to compare. Thanks for the quick response. My Summicrons have little to no play. In comparison this ring is very loose.

Don't have that lens, but do have Summicrons, Tele-Elmarit, and Tele-Elmar.  None of them are that loose.  Being that the Summilux is top-quality, and rather expensive, I would take it back and look for another.

Just sample variation in my experience. Stiff focus ring was another issue with this lens. Easy fix if it bothers you too much.

lct, Thanks for your response. What's the easy fix?

Any good repairer can do it together with a CLA. DAG in the USA for instance. Leica can do it as well but it will be more expensive and it will take longer.

Ah ok, just sent a email to DAG to get their input. Thanks

Don will fix it, no problem.  You might call him tomorrow to check his workload/timing.  Better than email in my experience.
