it appears that black paint IIIfs are quite uncommon. Laney states:

1. 100 winterised black IIIfs to the Swedish Army (no self-timer)

2. a number (a few according to Laney, whatever that means) of tropicalised black IIIfs that may have been a special order for an Indian dealer

Look what I saw on ebay today from a Japanese dealer - definitely a repaint job though it's not mentioned anywhere (that I can see) in the advert - deceptive IMHO

They are calling it "mint" (i detest the use of that word in this context); the box is the wrong one for that camera plus it has a modern strap

Not for me nor I suspect most collectors who are interested in old Leicas. I think that Luigi has said it perfectly.

some translation issues..

in Japan mint means almost never used

he never says its original black paint, its obviously repainted and fully CLA'd

he never says that strap is for that camera model, he is simply bundling stuff together.

A nice repaint job to achieve a model never made  by Leitz... 🙄

Obviously, comparable to the car tuning scene, there is also a Leica tuning scene.
Fortunately, such pimped Leicas stay quiet, unlike to noisy souped-up horsepower monsters.

did any swedish iii series have 3 crowns painted in white near the rangefinder window ?

I think the black IIIg cameras for the Swedish army had them, but the IIIf did not (I may be wrong though).

Certainly true, but I have to admire the quality of the repaint job, it looks fabulous.

I noticed one the other day (also I think from a Japanese ebay dealer) with Luxus-style gold plating and body covering. Quite why anyone would want to make a real Leica look like a Russian fake wasn't clear.

Hi,

Sorry for arriving late to the party. Yes, I've hold a real black IIIf with it's matching Elmar 5cm 3.5 as well as a real black IIIg.

The black IIIf does not exhibit any special engraving at all. The speeds sequence is the typical of the IIIf RD (25, 50, 75) and all the engravings are kind of yellowish (or showing some underlying nickel) so nothing to do with the initial picture of this thread.

Best regards and stay safe,

Augusto
