I guess having a mirror finished camera could make taking pictures of people used to selfies a bit easier. Seriously though, this is everything that is wrong with form over function...no visible interface cues at all, completely smooth and shiny surface that is already completely covered in scratches, despite what surely cannot have been heavy use. The body seems designed to fly out of the user's hands at the first drizzle or if someone is wearing gloves. I am very sympathetic to design...I think it is very important and I really appreciate good design. What I cannot understand here is how this is supposed to elevate the product? This seems to be an exercise in how to turn a functional camera into jewelry, as opposed to rethinking how an iconic camera could be designed. I cannot identify a single useful idea in this prototype...what a shame that two of the most iconic designers set about looking at an M camera and this is what they came up with.

I can't find this in the main auction catalogue for 12th June. Maybe they are putting it in as an 'add on' . I must admit that I had never heard of the Ive chap until this camera was produced some years ago and I have not heard of him since. I have never heard of Mr Newson before this morning. That said, I may have products, like the computer I am using, which Ive or Newson may have designed. This would be an item for buyers for whom design and Mr Ive would be significant. It is definitely a 'glass case' rather than a 'user' item as it is a 'one off'. It will be interesting to see what it fetches.

He's probably the most important living industrial designer, he has been instrumental in all Apple's successful designs since Jobs returned to them, and despite retiring from Apple a couple of years ago it seems like he consulted on the new iMac 24".

I'll take your word for it, Michael. I'm still trying to get past Barnack and Berek 😀 While I use Apple phones, iPads and computers, it is not a company that I have warm feelings about, despite the fact that it provides large numbers of jobs in my country. Ditto for the other usual IT suspects, of course.

Kenneth Grange for my money. I was astonished to learn that the same man had designed the Parker pen I used at school, the modern London taxi, the Kenwood Chef food mixer, steam irons for Morphy Richards, razors for Wilkinson Sword, cameras for Kodak, post boxes, parking meters and bus stop benches, lamps for Anglepoise, speakers for B&W and, best of all, the InterCity 125 High Speed Train.

No offence to anyone intended but, IMO, that's just plain Hideous. So wrong in so many ways and as a practical camera? Not even close.

Messrs Ive and Newson might be Titans in their field of Design and even Style Masters of the Universe but, clearly, they have no idea about what a photographer requires from their tool.

Completely agree. I wouldn’t take one of these if it was a freebie at a fair.

Ive is an overrated one hit wonder IMHO.

I remember when the "Red" camera came out in 2013 - there will be a thread on it somewhere in the forum.  This prototype is interesting, but never made it to a user camera.  These design studies are useful, in my view, like the M60, the Zagato and other limited edition collectors' items.  Some work, some don't.  The marketing hype which goes with them can be very off-putting, but without the M60, there would be no M-D or M10-D, both of which appear to have been very successful cameras ...

Perhaps you were joking, but I don't think this topic is even subjective. Love or hate Ive, there's no denying the multitude of "hits" from his brain. Not one, but 10+ MAJOR hits. World-changing hits. Awfully far from a one-hit wonder.

Regarding the camera, I don't think it's to be considered a typical camera, comparable to anything we have currently. The cost mentioned, which is so high that it urges people to find justification for it but receive only anger when they cannot, is just a fun number to discuss. None of us here will be placing a serious bid on it, but to someone that $$ will be acceptable. Not as an everyday camera, let's be clear. It's a museum piece.

To touch on the ongoing M11 thread M-evf topic I can't help but suspect that if Leica hadn't imposed some strict design limitations the first words from Sir Jonathan and Marc (based on their previous work) would have been along the lines of "Why don't we just ditch that rangefinder mechanism for an EVF and then we can lose all those ugly windows on the front".

Could not agree more.

The look is hideous.  As for the price, it's beyond obnoxious and pretentious.

If Messrs Ive and Newson are supposedly the Style Masters of the Universe, from here they have no where to go other than up.  These gents would do well to leave the camera/lens styling to the folk in Wetzlar - not that they don't on occasion go off the rails and produce a steaming mound or two of their own:

Not even especially original (cosmetically)....... Leica C1 1999-2001. BTW I believe these were made by Panasonic, early in that relationship.
