m410 Posted March 16, 2021 Share #1 Posted March 16, 2021 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I understand that the 90mm Macro-Elmar V1 and V2 lenses are identical optically. But, what is what now appears to be a large black collar on the Version 2 offering? I have seen the early issues of the V2 lens that did not have this black collar. What's up? Has Leica now added something new to the late V2 in comparison to the early V2's? Are there any other changes between the current V2 and any other early V2 or past V1 offerings? Thanks, jDD Late Version 2 with new black collar. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Advertisement Posted March 16, 2021 Posted March 16, 2021 Hi m410, Take a look here 90mm Macro Elmar V1 versus V2?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
alainD Posted March 16, 2021 Share #2 Posted March 16, 2021 I've tried recently a new v2 at the Leica store and did not see any black collar... Where did you see that particular lens? Alain
nwphil Posted March 17, 2021 Share #3 Posted March 17, 2021 (edited) That's weird - I believe they are both collapsible lenses. Maybe the sleeve slides in and out like some hoods Leica lenses have The v2 macro elmar kit does come with googless adapter Edit: just realized why looks different - look at the focus ring: the v1 is at mfd 0.8m and the v2 at infinity. Also, on the v1 the shaft is not extended Edited March 17, 2021 by nwphil 2

I didn't see that black collar on the Leica website.Where did you find it if i may ask?
Robert Blanko Posted March 17, 2021 Share #5 Posted March 17, 2021 I have never seen a version with black collar. Mine which I bought quite recently does not have a black collar. It appears moreover hard to imagine how the collar could slide in when the marcro Elmar is collapsed. 🤔 Could work, but looks kind of tricky... wattsy Posted March 17, 2021 Share #6 Posted March 17, 2021 (edited) @nwphil is correct (though he/she has mixed up the lenses). The v.2 has been collapsed and focussed to close focus. The v.1 is extended and focussed at infinity. There is no black collar or "later version v.2". Edited March 17, 2021 by wattsy
lct Posted March 17, 2021 Share #7 Posted March 17, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Could it be that the "v2 with back collar" above is in fact a non collapsible v3?
UliWer Posted March 17, 2021 Share #8 Posted March 17, 2021 No, wattsy‘s explanation is right. The „collar“ is nothing else than the lens collapsed and focused on 0.8m.

There is no black collar. The lens is collapsed and focussed to 0.8m. As you focus closer, a section of the lens protrudes from the outer barrel. This is exactly the same on all versions of this lens. Excuse the crap (dusty) photo but I've just photographed my v.1 lens focussed to 0.8m and partially collapsed. What is being described as a black collar is part of the lens. 😀 Welcome, dear visitor! lct Posted March 17, 2021 Share #12 Posted March 17, 2021 The "black collar" looks shorter on my v1 but you are certainly right.

Indeed I mixed up - thanks for catching that If it matters, I am M.A.A.B/cisgender and very happy and content with that (LOL)
microview Posted March 17, 2021 Share #14 Posted March 17, 2021 Yes as you turn focusing the lens extends outwards by about 13mm. I seem to remember that with the old one if you held it pointing downwards, the telescoping part would drift open, but the v2 does not do that.
m410 Posted March 19, 2021 Author Share #15 Posted March 19, 2021 (edited) Mystery solved, thank you nwphil with the excellent eye. There is no new black-collar as such. Perhaps the V2 photo shown was featured in this position as the lens (unlike the V1) can be used if locked down in the retracted position and mounted on the V2 Macro-Adapter M. This configuration allows the 90mm Macro-Elmar V2 to be used from close focus to infinity. This flexibility eliminates the need to remove the V2 Macro-Adapter M from the body to use the lens at infinity. This is unlike the adapter removal requirement of the V1 Goggle Macro-Adapter M. The V2 image was featured in Europe, U.S. and Asia. Thanks for all the information. m410 Edited March 19, 2021 by m410
