Exactly the same for for me, had the SL2 from launch but in my view (for what I do), the SL2-S was actually a step up.

I know this is subjective of course but I have to say that the SL2-S to my mind is very similar to the M10P/R ‘look’ whereas the SL2 has it’s own, to one side, so to speak. Whilst I do you use a number of SL lenses predominately I’ve also found myself more comfortable using M glass on my SL2-S as a result also.

It almost feels like Leica had an internal meeting and said ‘look we’re 98% of the way there with the SL2 but we just need another crack at it so let’s do an S version with a new sensor’. In terms of high resolution FF Leica’s I also prefer the M10R’s sensor to the SL2’s as well, if the SL2 had this same sensor I probably wouldn’t have bought the SL2-S.

It shoot my M lenses all the time on my SL2. They look and work brilliantly. They also have the same look to my M10D. They might not be optically perfect in the corners etc but it’s not something I notice in real life use.

How do you like your M10D? I am quite fascinated by that camera, but I dont know if I'll keep mine yet. 

I love the M10D. Once I got it I instantly knew it was the right model for me. Fits in great with the film M’s. Works well with the iOS app if I need to access shots on the fly. 
 

Love the SL2 for its versatility of shooting and critical focus with the Noctilux etc.

Got to be the look of a Leica lens no?  Should be the Leica lens look.  The sensor, just like film (Kodak, Ilford, Fuji) is just a canvas that the lens draws onto.

its always about the lens, not so much the sensor.

And just like in the film days, this was only a starting point for the final rendering, after adjusting for film speed, developer and developing time/method, paper choice (contrast, texture, etc), enlarger light (cold head vs diffusion, etc), darkroom actions (dodging, burning, etc), and so on. Even then, user decisions and judgment trumped all else. There was never a singular ‘look’, Leica or otherwise, that relied solely on a camera or lens, or film. Same with digital; just different tools and workflow. All the elements matter, in context.

Leica look is also about the files.

 

I tend to agree that the Leica glass is the dominant factor but the sensor has unique qualities too. One time I mounted a Nikon F lens on my MP240 and the results were superior to what my native Nikon body could do with the same lens. Crisp pixels, leica color. There aren't many cameras out there with 24 megapixels, 36x24 size, without OLPF. It's not an exhaustive proof of a unique look but the sensor has its part.

Just like a canvas has a base color, just like print papers have their properties.

Cameras and lenses make a substantial difference. Of course you can take great photos with bad equipment and bad photos with great equipment but the better the equipment, the better your headroom. Better could mean IQ, haptics, UI, size, weight, etc.

not cheeky at all, i'm not the only one here asking what is the leica look with digital sensors is exactly, i was pretty firmly put in my place when i suggested its an old idea thats not really relevant now by someone with a sony sensor LOL.

so its software now..... i give up

If you search the subject most discussions agree it originated from Leicas 35mm film cameras which were a first at the time, so had a Leica look 

ive also seen claims it is ‘shooting with available light’ 

I don’t dispute any of that. What concerns me now is that there is no software in my Leica MP so .... does it have the Leica look 👀 😀
