With warmer weather on the horizon, city officials issued an order for people who had established a homeless community at a local park to relocate. Some were taken to shelters while others just walked away leaving all of their possessions behind. A crew was hired to come in and clean up the site and it was quite a mess.

A few weeks ago I walked past this encampment when there were about 40 tents scattered through the park. I started thinking a nice photo could be done at dusk with all the tents glowing from lanterns inside. I asked one of the people there if that's how the camp looked at night and he replied, "What are you taking about, man? These people don't have money to buy batteries, much less lanterns."  I felt like a dope for even asking that question. I thought briefly about buying 40 small lanterns and giving everybody one but decided not to because I figured they'd just end up discarded when the batteries died.
