I’m considering changing my 50Cron V5 to the 50lux pre-asph v3.

This one is a Mandler render and the Cron 35 ASPH v1 is very clinical Karbe. My pre-asph, late 70s lux 50mm used here has much more character. I think a comparison between the 50 Cron v5 vs. 50 Lux v3 would be more interesting. I can't remember I've seen a proper comparison between them before at comparable apertures. In the 50s area I am a sucker for the render of 50 lux ASPH though, must be one of the best out of focus renders of any Leica 50mm lenses... and beyond. Thanks! I thought so, but just wanted to be sure, since I know you have the 35mm Summicron ASPH v1 from that thread. 😊 Have you tried the 50mm Summicron V5? Being also a Mandler design, would be interesting to know how different it is to the Summilux pre-asph v3?
analogM Posted November 28, 2022 Share #470 Posted November 28, 2022 (edited) I don't have the 50 lux v3, but this is what the cron v5 can look like at f2 on tri-x (M6; hand held at 1/8 sec.). I suspect that the Cron v5 is a tad sharper at f/2, but it's hard to decide without a side-by-side comparison.
analogM Posted November 28, 2022 Share #472 Posted November 28, 2022 Sorry I can't do the side by side, I would be interested in that myself too. The cron v5 has all the sharpness I need. The photo of the father and son is not maximum sharpness because of some motion blurr, however in this situation, for me, the image is sharp enough. Overall the cron v5 is one of my absolute favorite lenses, it has it all (except f1.4 ;-)).
analogM Posted November 28, 2022 Share #473 Posted November 28, 2022 Colours are great too, but I find the type of film used to be of much greater influence on colour than the lens. I'm not quite sure how to explain it, but even though it's very sharp, I've always found the Summilux v3 to have a sort of "rounded edges" at f/2. The Summicron seems more crisp. evikne Posted November 30, 2022 Author Share #475 Posted November 30, 2022 I think we should continue with only images from the 50mm Summilux pre-ASPH from now on. But if anyone has more pictures to compare with the 50mm Summicron v5, they are welcome to post in this thread that I started some time ago: (PS. My lens has since had a CLA and got rid of the flare problem)

But I use it mostly as a portait lens and don't care much about those things. Unfortunately, I don't know the Apo Lanthar, so others can probably give you a better answer.
charlesphoto99 Posted December 1, 2022 Share #480 Posted December 1, 2022 I've got a late e46 version of this lens, though haven't used it in awhile. So I did some digging and realized I've taken some of my favorite pics of the kids with it. Need to dig it back out - it's a great expressionistic lens that is super sharp when it needs to be (and forgiving of highlights) yet easy to be imperfect with. All with M9 except b&w M9M.
